We Will Always Have Computer Generated Championships

Just in time for tonight’s computer-generated, bailout-sponsored “national championship” game between Alabama and Texas, the new director of the Bowl Championship Series has officially begun his “tenure.”

And for those of you who thought he might be open to putting the best interests of the game (i.e. a playoff system) ahead of the tired old excuses offered every year by the “powers that be,” prepare yourself for a rush of cold water.

From the AP:

Bill Hancock said a playoff at college football’s highest level would lead to more injuries, conflict with final exams, kill the bowl system and diminish the importance of the regular season.

“I know (the BCS) is not completely popular, but I believe in it,” Hancock told reporters Thursday at the Football Writers Association of America awards breakfast. “I believe it is in the best interest of the universities.”

“College football has never been better and I believe the BCS is part of that.”

Hancock went on to talk about how a playoff system works at the Division I-AA level, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it would work for Division I-A.

Frankly, these are all excuses we’ve heard before … and none of them hold a drop of water as far as we’re concerned.

With college teams playing 12-game regular seasons (and half of them practicing throughout the month of December as they prepare to fill one of a ridiculous sixty-eight bowl slots), there is NO REASON that the current bowl system cannot be modified to include an eight-team playoff system.

A playoff should never happen. Anyone who thinks it should happen has never looked at the big picture. A playoff would ruin the game and wouldn’t end the controversy.

And let’s not sail west, invent a longer-lasting light bulb or walk upright, either.

In fact, let’s all just start grunting and clubbing each other over the head with tree limbs.

A playoff would “ruin the game?”

No dumbass. Bailout sponsored games and thirty minutes worth of commercials between each set of downs during Bowl Week is what’s ruining the game.
