We’ve always admired former First Lady Nancy Reagan, but our respect for her reached a new level when we stumbled upon this letter sent to the mental institution that (sometimes) houses John Hinckley, Jr., the man who tried to kill her husband in March of 1981.
Hinckley’s assassination attempt against Ronald Reagan was part of an elaborate effort on his part to impress actress Jodie Foster.
He had previously stalked former president Jimmy Carter.
Anyway, here’s Mrs. Reagan’s letter …
To: John Hinckley
From: Mrs. Nancy Reagan
My family and I wanted to drop you a short note to tell you how pleased we are with the great strides you are making in your recovery. In our fine country’s spirit of understanding and forgiveness, we want you to know there is a nonpartisan consensus of compassion and forgiveness throughout.
The Reagan family and I want you to know that no grudge is borne against you for shooting President Reagan. We, above all, are aware of how the mental stress and pain could have driven you to such an act of desperation. We are confident that you will soon make a complete recovery and return to your family to join the world again as a healthy and productive young man.
Best wishes,
Nancy Reagan & Family
P.S. While you have been incarcerated, Barack Obama has been banging Jodie Foster like a screen door in a tornado. You might want to look into that.
Ha!
In case you were wondering the letter – which has also been attributed in the past to failed GOP presidential candidate John McCain – is a joke.
As in … it’s not real.
In fact, Nancy Reagan would have no doubt reminded us that the stars expressly told her that “Ronnie” shouldn’t have gone to the Washington Hilton that day.
What is real (amazingly)? The fact that Hinckley is now given multiple nine-day unsupervised visits with his parents.
Guess those connections with the family of George H.W. Bush must have paid off…
