More Fun From Corruptville, S.C.

With South Carolina firmly ensconced in its role as the butt of national jokes, what does it mean for Chesterfield County that it is quickly becoming the butt of South Carolina jokes?

Because our guess is that such a scenario “portends ill.”

And yet Chesterfield is clearly on the verge of surpassing even bass-ackwards Anderson County (a.k.a. “The Land That Time Forgot”) as the most incompetent and corrupt county in South Carolina … which is saying something.  Obviously, that’s bad news for Chesterfield residents, who are currently stuck with a 17% unemployment rate and some of the worst public schools in the history of Western civilization.

Anyway,  in keeping with ongoing scandal rash in this reddest neck of the woods, the latest news coming from “The Land That Time Forgot, Too” concerns a local Sheriff’s Deputy who was busted by the feds running a methamphetamine lab.

That’s right, people … you know things are bad when the local cops are cooking meth.

Anyway, this story was broken by The Link, which we’d like to point out is one of two “mainstream” newspapers in Cheraw, S.C. – a town of just over 5,000.

UPDATE: Cheraw, S.C. is known as “The Prettiest Town in Dixie,” in case you didn’t know.

Don’t forget Union county:
- Union Mayor Bruce Morgan and Zoning Administrator Jeffrey Lawson pleaded guilty to seeking bribes and kickbacks from building contractors.
- Union County Supervisor Donald Betenbaugh and Tax Assessor Willie E. Randall Jr arrested on federal charges of money laundering and accepting $50,000 in kickbacks and allowing Randall’s office to be used to store drugs. Randall is charged with distributing cocaine and methamphetamine.
- Union County Court Clerk Brad Morris charged with embezzling $200,000 in child support payments.
- Former Union County Sheriff Howard Wells charged with lying to federal agents about money not reported as taxable income.
- Unemployment 20.4%.

Um, I think you meant to say that The Link is the “Paper of Record” in Chesterfield County, and that its editor is way hunkier than you Will. At least you didn’t have to point out the glaring grammatical errors in Leighton’s story like in that “other” paper.

I know the City of Columbia government is pleased these counties are tying up the ink in the media. It keeps folks from looking too closely at this local mess we have here.

Hate that my old hometown is having several black eyes.

BTW, The Link appears to be covering Pageland and McBee as well, and Chesterfield. That’s the whole county, based in Cheraw.
The Cheraw Chronicle bills itself also as The Chesterfield Advertiser on a joint nameplate.
But there’s also the Pageland Progressive Journal on the other side of the county, which covers most of the county EXCEPT Cheraw, as far as I can tell.

“(Sheriff) Parker echoed some of the same comments.

‘It is hard to believe that this happened with Brent. It is a terrible shock and very disappointing because Brent is a good person. However, we are going to try to help him get the help he needs in order to get his life back on track. It goes to show you that bad things happen to good people.’”

Good god, what world are they living in? Brent is not a good person, Brent is a meth dealer & he had to be busted by the Feds because you guys missed it. What’s up with that one?

Look out, i thought i just saw Bo Duke riding by in General Lee. Boss Hawg {Jay Hodge} was out of town in New York City when all this went down. He’s going to be some kind of pissed off when he gets back and realizes some of his Christmas money got impounded by the Feds. i’m sure he’ll be “cracking” {some pun intended} the whip on the other dealers to make up for the loss in revenue. Somebody please help us down here, cause we got to have some kinda relief.

There’s so much corruption in this area that Satan himself got scared and hauled ass out of town.

Terrible shock, everyone surprised, they missed it, Feds found it…Mmm-Hmm. Yeah, right. Not really sure what’s going on, this investigation could take 2-3 years, who knows.

But for sure, no one is shocked, no one missed sh*t, and no one likes hypocracy. Everyone is thankful for law enforcement, and there’s some good ones here in this county, but I hope everyone knee-deep in the political crap sees the backside of the bars they’ve put plenty of people behind.

Speaking only for myself, I’d like to see the use of so many informants stopped. An entire case rests on drug dealers & users? They end up running everyone’s show and it’s just putting and keeping more drugs on the street.

I don’t think many people care for a pitbull of a sheriff either, or a probate judge who is rumored to be involved in shady dealings and tells everyone who disagrees with him to get a lawyer. God knows I probably shouldn’t post that, they’re better equipped than the military & really do as they please, so I suppose they could lock me up for posting this, but it’s gotten intolerable around here. No wonder abused women & kids, drug addicts, etc. get no help.

The folks of this county and SC need a new campaign, one for the people and by the people, centered around cleaning up government & keeping it clean.

Speaking of Chesterfield County Government. It’s no secret the Solicitor’s Office has had it’s “problems”. But then who hasn’t. My question is, why is Jonathan Hancock out of jail? He confessed to the murder of Eric Duncan and got out on a $50,000 bond. While on bond his DNA test matched an unsolved crime of the severe and brutal beating of his great aunt while attempting to rob her. He was arrested and again bonded out.

I do understand everyone that is accused of a crime is considered innocent until proven guilty under the constitution. But I don’t understand why a confessed murderer is sitting around his house and not behind bars. And Chesterfield County is allowing this menice to society to continue being a threat to us all. Makes me wonder who’s getting the kickback off of all this. If the shoe were on the other foot and the murdered person was white while the murderer was black, and the black guy also beat an elderly white lady he would never get out of jail.

I can’t imagine imagine how Eric Duncan’s mother, brother, children, and the rest of his family feels seeing his murderer walk the streets.

Just for the record, I am a white female that wants to see justice served in Chesterfield County.

Concerning the case above, I first heard his mother paid his bail. When locked up again, and was supposedly not given bail, a person who lived within eyesight of his home said he was out.

Now I don’t know too much about it, but I bet he had a little info. to tell the sheriff’s dept. and he walked. Or money changed hands. Who knows in this town. You can bet the solicitor’s office can find some kind of law or plea bargain to explain this away. Read above about what I had to say concerning informants and information. It’s not worth it to get a bust by letting anyone with a little piece of info talk and walk.

What I’ve said would not stand up in a court of law, but I’ll bet it’s the truth. Information or money. Or both is why he’s out, if he is indeed free. Then there’s family and connections. What else is so shocking is that Feds in town really seem to make no difference to these folks.

By the way, heard this will be Probate Judge Davis’ last term. Praise God.
