Nikki Gets Some National Love

nikki haley

S.C. Rep. Nikki Haley’s gubernatorial campaign was the recipient of some serious mainstream media love from nationally-syndicated columnist Kathleen Parker this week … while the Palmetto State was finally the recipient of a national news story that didn’t end in late night TV punch lines.

Haley, who has struggled to break into the top tier of 2010 GOP gubernatorial contenders, probably couldn’t have ended up with a better story had she written it herself.  Called “a minority woman in a six-way Republican primary in the heart of bubba-land,” she was also described in the piece as a “social conservative” whose focus was nonetheless on “business, taxes, government spending and education.”

From Parker’s column:

Among the first things (Haley) hopes to do as governor is push for elimination of the small-business and personal income taxes.

“When South Carolina stops punishing our business owners and individuals for their successes and instead starts to reward them, they will reinvest in our state, hire more workers, and our economy will start to move,” she writes on her Web site.

This kind of talk and Haley’s record in office earned her the highest rating from anti-tax groups, as well as early, if now problematic, approval from the current governor.

More recently, however, Haley also won the endorsement of the governor’s estranged wife, Jenny Sanford, who praised Haley’s pro-taxpayer, pro-business, reformist record. In a letter of endorsement, Mrs. Sanford wrote that what Haley has accomplished “takes guts, and it takes smarts, and Nikki has lots of both.”

As much as some people think the First Lady’s endorsement was a big deal (and depending on the cash it generates for Haley, it could be), there’s no endorsement that will ever substitute for strong fiscal policy.

On that note, Haley would be wise to play up those tax cuts in the weeks ahead …

Get rid of taxes….she is so crazy. Why would people want to keep their money when the state uses it so well?.If you dont watch it,acts like that might cause jobs. Then where would we be?

By Just the Facts Ma'am on November 25th, 2009 at 5:58 am

Kathleen Parker has been very, very wrong in the past….looks like that trend continues.

By Ynot on November 25th, 2009 at 6:42 am

Sorry Nikki, SC is not ready for a female governor yet. What would we call our First Dude?
That’s just the south honey and not a real reflection on you.

By Skidmarks on November 25th, 2009 at 6:59 am

She is unknown outside of the midlands.

By Cancerman on November 25th, 2009 at 8:00 am

She stayed on Sanfrauds Dick too long, she should not waist time and money.

By Commonman on November 25th, 2009 at 8:12 am

“I can’t recall whether I flew first class or coach for 18 hours to China with the luvguv” Haley still has a lot of explaining to do. That one slip up will follow her through out any campaign. I am tired of hearing the defenses, “what difference does it make” and “she really does not remember”. If she sat her backside in coach for that period of time, she would recall every minute. Now, first class would have been a day at the spa. Her response or non-response speaks volumes to me. Tell the truth, be proud, and keep on keeping on.

By Jeffy on November 25th, 2009 at 8:29 am

So two people in the media have noticed her campaign? That’s it?

By Jack MeOff on November 25th, 2009 at 8:48 am

She told me she wrote it sipping bourbon on that first class err uh flight

By Statesman on November 25th, 2009 at 8:53 am

Watch out. A guy named Koon didn’t take her very seriously either.

By Toyota Kawaski on November 25th, 2009 at 9:05 am

Look its Gov.Moonbeam in a skirt.

By stimulus guy on November 25th, 2009 at 9:06 am

Let’s come up with some creative ways for the government to raise money without property or income taxes…… we could just get one of them China equity lines, their going to own us anyway, we might as well have a party.

By CNSYD on November 25th, 2009 at 9:37 am

The ONLY reason Parker penned that column was: 1. Haley is a female and 2. She is a first generation Indian. Other than that what makes her different from any other the GOP candidates? IRT all these taxes she will eliminate. First, she, as Governor, would have zero authority to eliminate them. Second, without an elimination of programs to go with the cuts, the money to pay for existing programs will have to come from somewhere. Oh we will just increase taxes on “large” business. Who the hell do you think those increases get passed down to?

For those of you who “can’t remember” how Rep Haley flew, just look at the comment on her website:

Question: What is the real story about Nikki’s trip to China?

Truth:

The Background: Nikki, along with several South Carolina CEOs, Commerce Department officials, the Governor, and other legislators attended the World Economic Forum in China in 2007. The trip was run by the Commerce Department, which means all her travel arrangements were scheduled by Commerce. During the trip Nikki flew Business Class, as did all legislators asked to travel to China. Nikki was proud of the policy and economic development lessons and information gained by the trip to China then – as evidenced by this press release sent out when she got back – and remains so now.

The Facts: When asked by a reporter, “How did you fly?,” Nikki, who did not schedule the trip and therefore was not sure if her seat was classified as First or Business Class, responded that she did not know and that the reporter should contact the Commerce Department to get an answer to any question he had about her travel. There is absolutely no wrong-doing on Nikki’s part in this trip.

What Else The Media Chose Not To Report: When offered a private hotel room for the entire trip, Nikki told Commerce that a private hotel room was not necessary and instead shared a room with a female member of the governor’s staff in order to keep expenses down.

By SC Integrity on November 25th, 2009 at 9:41 am

Reminds me of how Rielle’s baby papa was up for VP and couldn’t even win NC in 2004.

Ms. Parker is clueless about the true SC pulse and scoops. She’s trying to make a trend fit for which Haley doesn’t meet the criteria.

By K Trane on November 25th, 2009 at 9:44 am

I hope she gains momentum. In my opinion, she’s the only candidate worth leading the state. But she’s not a good ‘ole boy, thus she’s put at a major disadvantage.

By Cindy on November 25th, 2009 at 10:09 am

Wow! If ‘two people in the media’ have noticed Nikki and they are the POLITICO and RED STATE she definately has my vote. South Carolina is notorious for its liberal media and RHINO’s. I don’t expect local media to latch on to a real strong conservative female, except you fits!!!

By Groundball on November 25th, 2009 at 10:15 am

I agree Commonman. If she had flown that long on coach she would have been looking for an accupuncturist when she got off the plane. No more Sanford clones!

By Dismayed on November 25th, 2009 at 10:16 am

Yes, a candidate who claims to be able to deliver effective government without income taxes is going to be very popular in some quarters, especially among those who believe in a free lunch.

By Nathan Earle on November 25th, 2009 at 10:20 am

A Kathleen Parker endorsement does not help Nikki Haley. If anything, it makes me very wary about supporting Haley–just as would be the case if, say, Jim Hodges or Jesse Jackson were to endorse her.

By dakota fanning on November 25th, 2009 at 10:36 am

isnt kathleen parker the most pro-democrat establishment (as you call it RINO) media stooge, fake conservative of all nationally syndicated “Republican” columnists? As for haley, herself, she claims principle above all else, yet wasn’t she one of sanfraud’s biggest lickspittles/toadies? and jenny sanford’s endorsement is supposed to mean something? is this the same woman who entreated the media to “repsect her privacy” and then went about running the media campaign to save the governor’s arse, calling the AP into her boudior, writing a book about her travails, and then blabbing about it all to to Babs on nat’l TV? This site is occassinaly funny and entertaining, but its pimping is most transparent.

By Genomic Repairman on November 25th, 2009 at 11:29 am

Um if she wants to win, she needs more than just this endorsement. Maybe like Andre Bauer getting caught in a cemetary with a male gigolo, McMaster buying a hooker of Craigslist, and Barrett getting burned for mailing out more campaign shit on the taxpayer dime.

By Liberty For Me on November 25th, 2009 at 11:57 am

DISMAYED.ETC…OK…for you morons who cant figure out how we survive without being taxed and having a big government…..UHHH..Like we did before we had a big government. You have a sales tax for what little government we need…For all you geniuses. Why do we need big government?? please explain…..I really want to debate this one!!….

By WorkingTommyC on November 25th, 2009 at 12:28 pm

Gee. How long until the primary and so many here are already declaring her campaign hopeless???

Ha! Watch the momentum!

Outside of some of their sycophants in SC, I don’t see this sort of positive press on the other candidates. In fact, everything they do seems to blow up in their faces.

Barrett comes off like a real dimwit every time he opens his mouth. He might as well just tell everyone right off the bat that he voted for spending our tax dollars on rich elitist bankers and corporate executives. He also might as well tell us how much he sold that vote for.

McMastah is a stereotype of himself–the ultimate good ol’ boy Southern politician. Add to that his Craig’s list debacle and taking money from people he hired for the state and he’s just more embarrassment for this state waiting to happen.

Bauer is the “Boy Lt. Governor” who pathetically begs for attention from Brad Wart Hen who throws him a bone and then mocks him on his blog. How pathetic is that: talking to and then being mocked by such a wimpy loser as Warthen? I wouldn’t be surprised if he got back at Warthen by complaining about his ill treatment to nursing home residents.

If I were bauerbarrettmcmastah, I’d be running scared right now. They/it have NOTHING to offer and NO record of reform. Then again, if you’re happy with how things are, vote for it.

By CNSYD on November 25th, 2009 at 12:28 pm

Richard, Since you are pimping for Haley, explain this to me. Did she or did she not KNOW she was not supposed to fly any class other than coach? If yes, did she question it and get, in writing, that it was “approved” by whoever approves such things? If she didn’t know then that is even worse as she should have known. Also, what the hell difference does it make what others did or did not do? We are talking about what she did. Thanks for telling us about her sleeping arrangements. I suppose she will borrow from her “Daddy” and tell us if elected she will sleep on a cot in her office.

By Joseph Reynolds on November 25th, 2009 at 12:38 pm

Just a question…

How long will it take for all the new jobs to start and the economy to turn around if income taxes are eliminated?

In conservative theory it should be immediately, since the taxpayers are so pleased at being freed from government bondage that they immediately start investing the savings back.

By Commonman on November 25th, 2009 at 12:54 pm

You go, CNSYD. Tell it like it is. Take that, Richard.

By Pat Hendrix on November 25th, 2009 at 12:55 pm

I think that SC should become an incubator for the Club for Growth-Sanford-Nikki-American Taliban crowd’s ideology. Totally defund government, public education and infrastructure construction. I imagine a pine tree covered version of Somalia, with religious zealots rewriting the legal code, a population of gun toting illiterates and an economy based on taking other states’ plutonium and bible sales.

And speaking Nikki, I’m getting hungry. I’m thinking Nirlep buffet.

By Liberty For Me on November 25th, 2009 at 4:06 pm

Joseph Reynolds…yes it would be immediate

By Neocon on November 25th, 2009 at 4:22 pm

She’s gang banged by you guyys so I dont think she needs much more love.

By James the Foot Soldier on November 25th, 2009 at 5:12 pm

All y’all “experts” didn’t know who a fella named DeMint was either. Are your memories that bad that you don’t remember how aforementioned politician came from nowhere and South Carolina FINALLY sat a real conservative Senator….nonsense like “she has no name recognition outside the midlands” means nothing at this point…y’all can’t see a real conservative even if she kissed you on the lips.

By wowee on November 25th, 2009 at 5:34 pm

Hey Toyota Kawasaki,

Gov Moonbean has been in lots of skirts, for the record…..

Haley has no chance. None.

By CNSYD on November 25th, 2009 at 7:18 pm

James the Foot Soldier, I issue you the same challenge I always issue you Demented lovers. Name me the high profile Senate committees that he is on. Tell what landmark legislation he has written and gotten passed. Tell me who in the Senate pays any attention to him. OK times up.

By scooter on November 25th, 2009 at 9:06 pm

I could only be creeped out worse if Palin was involved. I am so tired of these people.

By Liberty For Me on November 25th, 2009 at 11:16 pm

CNSYD ….DeMint has the best voting record in the senate…
Don’t know of a committee…

Pat Hendrix…..I think your idea is awesome.I would move there tomorrow.I can picture people productive ,free and happy with a very efficient government and utilities.

By CNSYD on November 26th, 2009 at 10:33 am

LFM, he might have a voting record but what counts is what gets passed. I think that is where he falls short. A voice crying in the wilderness gets very little accomplished. You can’t influence legislation from the back benches.

By SnakeMD on November 26th, 2009 at 7:11 pm

Don’t count Haley out. I have seen her speak, several times, and she appears to be quite good. In politics, the race sometimes goes to the best performance. They tried to portray Ronald Reagan as a lightweight. And Sanford is truly a very bright individual, but his intelligence has failed him.

By James the Foot Soldier on November 26th, 2009 at 11:14 pm

CNSYD – Senator DeMint sits on 4 committees:
Foreign Relations
Banking
Commerce
Joint Economic

The fine Senator is wreaking havoc on Obama’s appointments and single-handedly stopped Obama’s policy on Honduras in its tracks – you know, the Obama policy that wanted to install another marxist dictator in South America.

Not bad for the junior senator from South Carolina. If only the senior senator from South Carolina would grow a pair and become as effective from the back bench.

By CNSYD on November 27th, 2009 at 10:04 am

James the Foot Soldier, Based on your reply I did a cursory look at Demented’s web site for legislation. A number of bills he sponsored were referred to committee, some as long as 2 plus years ago. This would have been during the Bush administration. So even then his stuff was sent to a dusty shelf. He did get some resolutions thru such as honoring the life of Charlton Heston. Was he from SC? Did this help the people of SC in any way? I see that at times he is paired with Brownback on legislation. Not surprising as they as both members of “The Family” and are perhaps ghost writers for Doug Coe. You do recall that our wonderful Governor is a member of the group also don’t you? IRT appointments, which ones has he stopped? Struting in front of microphones and/or cameras for the homefolk is one thing, doing something is another.

By Liberty For Me on November 27th, 2009 at 3:32 pm

CNSYD …I am trying to understand what logic you use to attack people.
Because DeMint has only one vote,it makes him a bad senator??…If he voted for only things he saw were going to pass no matter what they were then he has a better voting record??….somebody help me understand this.

By CNSYD on November 27th, 2009 at 4:27 pm

LFM, my point was not his vote but his “me against the world” stance. Politics is the art of compromise. You have to give and take because if you are rigid you will just be ignored and bypassed. That is the mistake that he and Paul make. Little victories are better than no victories.

By jeffy on November 27th, 2009 at 5:01 pm

OH GOD , Cindy is back.

By James the Foot Soldier on November 27th, 2009 at 10:16 pm

The people of Honduras having a legally elected president rather than an Obama annointed marxists dictator is a BIG victory.

Do tell – what were Senator Obama’s legislative accomplishments in his illustrious Senate career? We already know Senator Obama in Illinois supported the killing of babies that managed to survive the abortionists knife – enlighten us on his other “accomplishments”.

3. “Nikki, along with several South Carolina CEOs, Commerce Department officials, the Governor, and other legislators attended the World Economic Forum in China in 2007.” I WANT TO KNOW WHY ANY OF THEM ARE COURTING CHINA. STOP IT! STOP IT NOW! We need jobs not more Chinese CRAP.
4. Info on DeMint: http://demint.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=Votes.Home
Why waste time talking about DeMint when we have Graham to trash. Talk about a senator that’s made bad decisions. He is selling us up the river to the globalists perverts.
5. Im voting for Larry Grooms. A normal guy who loves his country and family. That’s all I need.
