SEC Champs!

Since there’s absolutely nothing for Gamecock fans to cheer about (again) this year on the football gridiron, why not take a moment and give it up for the University of South Carolina women’s soccer team, which won its first-ever Southeastern Conference Championship Sunday night.

Better yet, why not go check out the team for yourself when they kick off NCAA Tournament action in Columbia later this week …

The Gamecocks, coached by Shelley Smith, knocked off Louisiana State in the tournament finale thanks to an 8-7 edge in penalty kicks and another strong performance from tournament MVP Blakely Mattern – whose game-tying goal forced the shootout.

The championship is South Carolina’s first conference crown since the baseball team captured the 2004 SEC title.

The win lands USC (17-3-2) in the NCAA tournament for the third straight year, where the Gamecocks will face Davidson on Friday.  Click here for game time and ticket info.

How can we have a NCAA tournament in SC? Hasn’t the NCAA heard of the NAACP boycott because of the flag?
