Droid Does … What?

Motorola launches its new “Droid” SmartPhone this week exclusively through Verizon Wireless, which in the interest of full disclosure is the company that ass-rapes us each month on our cell phone bill.

Anyway, as its viral marketing campaign suggests, “Droid Does” a lot of stuff that its main competitor – the Apple iPhone – doesn’t do.

Here’s the Droid homepage, and here’s a review of the phone from Brainstorm Tech’s Jessi Hempel.

The phone that many are calling an “iKiller” sells for $199 – after you sign a two-year contract with Verizon and get a $100 rebate.

The data costs?  According to PC magazine, Droid’s two-year unlimited data plans are roughly as expensive as those associated with the iPhone – roughly $4,000.

Our founding editor, Sic Willie, has already requested that he be allowed to purchase a Droid phone (multiple times, in fact), but thus far Mrs. Sic has exercised her veto power.  Basically, that means he can purchase the phone if he wants, he just won’t “get any” for an extended period of time.

Currently, Sic sports a Blackberry Curve through Verizon (which he uses for work) and an Apple iPod (for fun).

Sort of like requesting multiple times to take a trip to Argentina. But at least I see that you’ve learned the “50/50 rule”:

Half the time, you do what she wants to do, and the other half of the time, you do what she wants you to do.
