Monday was a busy day on the Democratic gubernatorial trail as two of the race’s top candidates vied for media attention.
Columbia lobbyist Dwight Drake kicked things off by announcing that his candidacy had received the endorsement of two state lawmakers, Rep. Boyd Brown (D-Winnsboro) and Rep. Bakari Sellers (D-Bamberg).
“Dwight Drake is, simply put, the best candidate to get South Carolina working again, and there is no more important job for the next Governor than that,” Brown said in a prepared statement released by the Drake campaign. “He has the hands-on experience and proven leadership that we desperately need, and with his comprehensive jobs plan, Dwight offers actual solutions, not just catch phrases, to get our state back on track.”
Meanwhile, Charleston attorney Mullins McLeod challenged his fellow Democrats to “forgo any run for higher office,” a campaign promise that appears to have been nothing more than an excuse to rip on S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford.
To wit …
“Mark Sanford has been a disaster for South Carolina for a lot of reasons, but focusing his time and energy on national politics instead of dealing with a jobs crisis and failing schools here at home is right on the top of that list,” McLeod said in a statement released by his campaign. “South Carolina desperately needs a Governor who can put aside their own personal ambition and focus on the job at hand.”

…while they are playing stupid politics, Vincent Sheheen was busy finding ways to get benefits to the State’s unemployed!

Sheehen’s got my vote…unless I find out that he intervened on this solicitor thing in my neck of the woods that, everyday, is looking like more of the same old same old.
Our solicitor’s office (under new management) seems to be doing okay. They just need to stop plea-bargaining people out of respective crimes to get them enrolled in drug court.
However, there is a much-needed changing of the guard at Cheraw Pol. Dept., with regard to one municipal judge, a couple of “detectives”, and at least 2 officers.
At least 2 people I know have answered for their crimes. One is in prison. Time for the suits to pay their dues. Go to jail or resign.

That would be the first piece of legislation I can remember the guy drafting, Fred. Anyways, wasn’t it his job to have done that BEFORE this happened? Taking credit for cleaning up a mess you made doesn’t strike me as reason to brag.
