The “Jean Toal Driving Experience” Rolls On?

A city of Columbia cop, prominent supporter of S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford and consultant in the Columbia mayoral race are all telling FITS (independent of each other) that there has been another “incident” involving S.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice Jean H. Toal and her chronic inability to safely operate motor vehicles.

We’ll be bringing you what we’ve been told about this latest alleged vehicular drama soon, assuming Toal doesn’t censor it, anyway.

If the reports are true, though, it obviously wouldn’t be the first time the Chief Justice has “run into” trouble.

Toal was cited in 2001 for leaving the scene of an accident after she “didn’t remember” side-swiping a parked car near her downtown Columbia home.  Toal admitted she had been drinking earlier in the  night, but insisted alcohol did not factor into the crash.

Six years later, in March of 2007, Toal was ticketed once again for leaving the scene of an accident after slamming into a car at the Columbia airport and – once again – fleeing the scene.

“She backed into a car, hit the car pretty hard, got out of the car, went around, looked and got back in the car and motioned for (a witness) to get out of the way and drove out of the parking lot saying she was in a hurry,” a local Sheriff said at the time.

Toal was later called back to the scene, at which point she claimed not to have seen the damage.

Stay tuned …

and of course, these revelations come right during the time she has to make an important judgement for Sanford.

Hellz yeah! As long as she did not hurt/kill anyone this should make for comedy gold.

I’ve heard the same rumor for a couple of weeks also. Try finding a City of Columbia cop who will talk when Bob Coble’s daughter was Toal’s law clerk. Those incident reports are so shreaded they are like sands in the hour glass. If there is no incident report, then it never happened.

Sanford had more and better junk on Jean two years ago, but didn’t do anything about it. Reporters at The State had this story over 6 weeks ago and no one has heard a word from them about it. Are they laying back on Jean like they did Maria and Mark? Brad Warthen make some calls to some of your old moles on Shop Road and find out what they are hiding over there on this mess.

Funny how you can write stories that don’t name names and lead people to believe things.

My favorite part is how “a prominent supporter” of Sanford’s is dishing some story to you.

Fiction makes things more fun.

This story doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. Are police reports public record? How about a FOIA request Willie?

Toal is used to hitting cars and fleeing the accident because she has a toddy in the car with just enough ice to cause a condensation ring to form on her wooden dash in her Benz, and drinking that is her main concern. Further, when you can just kindly place a check on the unassuming victims car that is guaranteed by South Carolina taxpayer money, it makes the whole ordeal seem like you won the lottery. Not only are you given money, you are given the money by a bona fide celebrity in the SC legal power circle! That is a deal!
