It could very well be that Tennessee Titans’ head coach Jeff Fisher has officially lost his marbles … or is actively trying to get fired.
Or it could be that he’s finally realized (like our founding editor) that it’s OK to man-crush on the NFL’s best quarterback, Peyton Manning.
Whatever the case, Fisher donned a Peyton Manning jersey Tuesday while introducing former Indianapolis Colts’ head coach Tony Dungy at a charity fundraiser.
“I just wanted to feel like a winner,” Fisher joked.
Ruh-roh.
Sure, he was kidding. And sure, Dungy no longer coaches the Colts … so what’s the big deal, right? Also, Manning is still idolized in the Volunteer State, where he set all sorts of records at the University of Tennessee.
But two weeks ago, Manning also shredded Fisher’s defense for over 300 yards and three touchdowns en route to a 31-7 victory – one of six losses the Titans (who had the NFL’s best record a year ago) have reeled off to open the 2009 season.
Seriously, people. This is a team that was supposed to contend for the Super Bowl this year …
Anyway, Fisher’s “joke” didn’t go over well with Titans fans, who feel he disrespected the organization and its players.
Just a day earlier, Titans owner Bud Adams said he would consider changing coaches during the season if the Titans didn’t show improvement.
Fisher is the longest-tenured head coach in the NFL, having been with the Titans since 1994 – when they were still the Houston Oilers. He has a 128-108 record as the coach of the franchise, with six playoff appearances.
