We are routinely accused of “man-crushing” on Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback Peyton Manning around here … a charge that is not entirely without merit.
Our founding editor has been a Colts fan for twenty-three years (i.e. two years after their post-midnight Mayflower ride from Baltimore), and he indeed shed buckets of man tears following Kelvin Hayden’s game-clinching interception return in Super Bowl XLI.
Sic Willie also has a little personal history with Manning, having interviewed him back in “the day” (a.k.a. during Manning’s insanely successful college career at Tennessee).
But “man-crushing?” Come on … that sounds an awful lot like stalking, which is something we don’t condone around here.
For example, it would be highly suspicious (and a little scary) were we to tell you that Manning was chillaxing last night at the bar at Harry and Izzy’s Grille (which he co-owns) in Indianapolis, waiting to meet his lovely wife, Ashley.
Which we wouldn’t … errr, didn’t know …
Anyway, Manning’s Colts are finally atop one of the NFL’s three major power rankings this week – coming in first according to the latest ESPN poll.
Indy is 5-0 on the young season, with Manning setting a blistering pace by tossing five consecutive 300 yard games. The twelfth-year franchise quarterback (who hasn’t missed a start over his entire career) has already thrown for over 1,600 yards and 12 touchdowns, while completing nearly 75% of his passes.
Earlier this season, Manning passed former Vikings’ great Fran Tarkenton on the all-time touchdown list, meaning he now trails only Dan Marino and Brett Favre.
Meanwhile, Peyton’s brother Eli is enjoying life atop the CBS and FOX power rankings, although the 5-0 New York Giants will put their place among the National Football League’s elite on the line this weekend when they go up against the New Orleans Saints, who are also undefeated.
Indianapolis has a bye this coming Sunday before taking on the hapless Rams on October 25.

FITS I hate to tell you this but Indianapolis will be this generations Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins from earlier generations. There is no doubt that they are one of the top 5 but there are too many teams in the AFC to compete against. They remind me of the Bears from the 80′s,a great team that really dominated 1 year (losing to my Dolphins for their only loss)but they always ran into the Redskins or the 49′ers who knocked them out of the playoffs. But for 2009–Go Dolphins…

Hey F-chop,
Three letters, X-L-I …
Buffalo got any of those?
Didn’t think so …

P.S. – The Dolphins Suck.

Darkseid616 you’re wrong because Manning won one Superbowl unlike your Dolphins or the Buffalo Bills and no NFL team has ever won 12 games 6 and now soon to be 7 years in a row. The Colts are the 2nd youngest team in the NFL meaning they just may win 1-2 more Super Bowls. Since Manning plays with his mind, he can play more effective in his later years than Farve has been at times – although he’s playing smarter now.
