Liberal lobbyist Dwight Drake raised $300,000 in his first seven weeks as an announced candidate for governor of South Carolina, his campaign announced Friday.
It wasn’t immediately clear who was lining Drake’s pockets – as campaigns aren’t required to disclose their itemized receipts and disbursements until Monday. Drake also spent close to $70,000 over the past seven weeks, meaning he has $230,000 on hand.
By comparison, Democratic front-runner Vincent Sheheen had $460,000 on hand after two quarters of fund-raising – but that was three months ago. Sheheen announced last week that his campaign had crossed the $700,000 mark, although we don’t know yet how much of that is in the tank.
Meanwhile, Charleston attorney Mullins McLeod has $320,000 on hand after two quarters of fund-raising.
No other Democrat – including State Superintendent of Education Jim Rex – has raised any serious money.

Wanna know who’s lining Drake’s pockets? Um.. that would be Mr. Drake. Word on the street is that he has put at least $50K in his own pot. Not to mention McLeod as you all know put in $100K to himself. Glad one candidate knows how to earn his own way to the Guv’s seat.

We will now call the South Carolina Democratic Gubernatorial primary: “The Race to Second Place”
Now there is something interesting in this story.

Grandpa Drake is going to get whipped by Sheheen.

Looks like Drake is on par to rake it in. $300k in half the time that the others had this quarter, not surprising given his connections. He’ll probably catch up w/ Sheheen in a few months. It remains to be seen whether he can get votes, though.
