Go Muse!

muse

We’ll be honest … we had never heard of the band Muse prior to attending Saturday night’s U2 concert in Raleigh, N.C.

Or maybe we had heard of them- but lost them somewhere in the resin-clogged synaptic pathways of our brains, which is where the vast majority of our short-, middle- and long-term memory apparently goes to die.

Seriously, people … it’s why we call so many people “man” or “darling.”  It’s not that we’re being rude, we have absolutely no idea what their names are.

In fact, it wasn’t until the closing number of the band’s nine-song set in Raleigh that we finally caught up with a tune we recollected, the 2004 glam rock anthem “Our Time Is Running Out.”

And of course we recollected that that song rocks.

But then again every song Muse played on Saturday night rocked in our book, which is why we went ahead and downloaded their entire Saturday night set list from iTunes, even though more than a few people told us we were wasting our money because they were “Radiohead ripoffs.”

Well, sometimes they do sound like Radiohead – which last time we checked wasn’t a bad thing.  But sometimes they also sound like Nine Inch Nails.  And sometimes they sound like Queen.  And here’s the cool thing … sometimes they sound like all three of those bands at the same time.

Muse hails from Teignmouth, Devon – or the southernmost tip of England.  The band is comprised of vocalist/ guitarist Matthew Bellamy, bassist/ vocalist Christopher Wolstenholme and drummer Dominic Howard.  They’ve been around since 1994 and have recorded five studio albums.

Take a listen to two of their newer songs …

Uprising (2009)
Undisclosed Desires (2009)

Good stuff, right?

We think so … and so do a lot of other folks who are hearing Muse for the first time on the U2 tour.

Yes, dude! Killer band. So over-the-top, but it’s a blast. Wish I’d seen them live.

Correction…if original release date of 1st album = 1999, they cannot be around “since 2004.”

Check out Pink FLoyd’s old music. U2 followed up on that. Now Muse.
Want a thriller ?? Catch Pink Floyd’s PIGS
It was clearly written way way ahead of TIME~( hint hint)

PIGS from the album Animal Farm.

Big man, pig man, ha ha, charade you are
You well heeled big wheel, ha ha, charade you are
And when your hand is on your heart
    You’re nearly a good laugh
    Almost a joker
With your head down in the pig bin
    Saying “keep on digging”
Pig stain on your fat chin
What do you hope to find?
When you’re down in the pig mine
    You’re nearly a laugh
    You’re nearly a laugh
    But you’re really a cry.
Bus stop rat bag, ha ha, charade you are
You fucked up old hag, ha ha, charade you are
You radiate cold shafts of broken glass
    You’re nearly a good laugh
    Almost worth a quick grin
You like the feel of steel
You’re hot stuff with a hat pin
And good fun with a hand gun
    You’re nearly a laugh
    You’re nearly a laugh
    But you’re really a cry.
Hey you Whitehouse, ha ha, charade you are
You house proud town mouse, ha ha, charade you are
You’re trying to keep our feelings off the street
    You’re nearly a real treat
All tight lips and cold feet
    And do you feel abused?
    …..!…..!…..!…..!
You gotta stem the evil tide
And keep it all on the inside
    Mary you’re nearly a treat
    Mary you’re nearly a treat
    But you’re really a cry.

    * supposedly written about a lady in UK named Whitehouse for the record.

For some epic Muse, look up on YouTube Starlight from the 2006 MTV EMA’s. Amazing gig.

I got turned onto MUSE about a year ago from a younger co-worker. They are flat-out the best live band around right now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8WP7aOD_9Q

I did a post on them about six months ago. No, they are not new – they did start recording in England about 1999 almost right out of high school. They did get the ‘Radiohead rip-off’ label when they started, but they’ve found their own niche..
