Stupid Is As “Tumpy” Does
Life’s dilemmas don’t always have clear answers … sometimes you’ve got to go with your gut, make a tough choice, and be willing to take the good with the bad.
For example, it pains us to the core to have to “show some love” to former La Socialista (a.k.a. The State newspaper) editorial page editor Brad Warthen, whose left-of-center musings are thankfully confined these days to a blog that’s read by about fifteen people. Except for today, anyway.
For once, Warthen is doing us all a favor by exposing somebody who deserves to be exposed – the pseudo-socialist, brain-dead, “don’t you know who my daddy was” bovine also known as Carroll A. “Tumpy” Campbell III, who is currently running for South Carolina’s First Congressional District.
We’ve already made our thoughts on “Tumpy” perfectly clear, most recently in our article entitled “Congress: So Easy Even A Tumpy Could Do It.”
But Warthen had the, um, “opportunity” to listen to Campbell’s Congressional stump (tump?) speech at a local Rotary Club meeting on Monday.
Needless to say, he was not impressed …
I didn’t take any notes on his speech, unfortunately. I usually start taking notes during a Rotary speech when the speaker says something interesting. I mean, I’m not there as a reporter, but if the speaker says one interesting thing, I pull out my notebook and write it down. And if he or she keeps on saying interesting things, I keep the notebook out and keep writing, and maybe mention it on the blog later. Suffice it to say that I was never in danger of even thinking about taking out my notebook during Tumpy’s speech.
Until it was over. Then I realized that I wished I had a record of it. (When the video is posted on the club site, I’ll try to remember to go back and link to it.) I wanted the record because, in retrospect, this speech was strikingly vapid. It was no ordinary bad speech, but a monument to the painful mediocrity that permeates the electoral process in our poor state.
In a nutshell, the gist of it was this: South Carolina needs new and different leadership. That was wedged in among a bunch of half-stated Republican cliches. In other words, the message was We need new leadership, but I sure ain’t it, because I’ve got nothing original to say.
Someone pointed out to me that even the cliches weren’t complete, but they were so unmemorable that I can’t attest to the accuracy of that observation.
Wow.
Apparently Campbell is so dumb he can’t even regurgitate cliches without completely fouling things up and running back to the whole “my daddy brought BMW to South Carolina” spiel.
Does it not give it away that a grown man calls himself “Tumpy?” Or that his white trash girlfriend (sorry, fiance) calls him “Tump Tump?”
Sheesh.
It would be one thing if Campbell’s two brain cells got together and agreed that market-based reforms were what South Carolina needed to move forward as a state. Unfortunately, based on his disastrous tenure on the S.C. State Ports Authority board, it’s obvious his two brain cells have coalesced around the failed notion that government knows best.
Tumpy Campbell is just another dumb RINO trading on the GOP’s former glory, which has now been duly acknowledged all along the state’s political spectrum.

Yikes, white trash girlfriend? Easy there, kids.
As for Tumpy, or whatever he calls himself, he is just another in a long line of rich, entitled brats trading on their names. The worst offender is currently playing tennis on the taxpayer’s dime. Or is he in a halfway house?
I have my qualms with Fits, but I agree that something radical has to change in this state. Tear it all down. The current system is too broken to fix.

Brad Warthen, “left-of-center”, could only come from a dumb arse like you, fitz. Brad Warthen, who was proud of The State’s record of never endorsing a Democratic Party candidate for president after Harry Truman in 1948. The same Brad Warthen, religious fanatic, who slavishly endorsed the Repugnant Party platform on abortion. The identical Brad Wathen who helped foist Mark Sanford on this state and George Bush three times!
But, I digress. The only difference between you and Tump Tump is you have learned to memorize the entire cliche of Repugnant Party talking points, while Tump Tump has the intellectual capacity to learn only half of the cliche.
Dream on, fitz. I enjoy watching the Repugnant Party shrink further into its angry bubba base.

The BMW “message” as well as the “my Daddy” message will not fly in the Lowcountry. Daddy screwed over the Lowcountry every chance he got. He sold the soul of SC to get BMW here. Why do you think BMW has donated wads of money to maintain the Campbell name? When the Naval Base came under attack Daddy couldn’t have cared less. It was not in the upstate and it wasn’t spelled BMW. How did shorty Campbell do running for office and using his Daddy’s name? Also it appears “Tumpy” hasn’t located his Daddy’s hairspray yet.

Redbank,
Yeah, I’ve never understood the notion on Fits that Warthen was a lefty. I found his writing to be undistilled Republican talking points. He was a proud and vocal Conservative. Perhaps they want to lump him on the other side because he was a lame and dishonest writer. But alas, he’s all yours, fits.
By columbia insider on September 29th, 2009 at 12:43 pm
This from the Tumpster (as reported in The State) after Gov. Sanford kicked him off the State Ports Authority board (because his lobbying firm had clients who did business with the SPA): “‘If I had to ask Mark Sanford a question, it would be, “Is there not an ounce of loyalty in your body?,” Campbell said. ‘I’d venture to say my father helped deliver Mark Sanford the governor’s office. I’m pretty offended by this.’”
Well, the citizens of South Carolina should be offended by Tumpy’s presumption to serve as one of its congressmen. The guys leaves his wife (with whom he’s had children) for another woman, gets kicked off the SPA for conflicts of interest, has worked with the Catawba Indians to bring gambling to the state and is a joke in Columbia.

regardless of the merit of any of the arguments concerning this post and article, as a strong supporter of FITS, I still find the reference to “white trash girlfriend” to be inappropriate and low class. Tumpy Campbell has put himself out there – and for that, he and all others brave enought to enter the fray are fair game. The callous attack on her is indefensible and severely damages the credibility of your argument and blog.
By CNSYD on September 29th, 2009 at 1:42 pm
We citizens of SC are supposed to be happy that Daddy Campbell put Sanfraud in the Governor’s office?
By Not Sayin', Just Sayin' on September 29th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
White trash might have been harsh, but “homewrecker” is completely appropriate.
By Strom's Daughter on September 29th, 2009 at 2:36 pm
Brad Warthen can be described as a lot of things — ineffectual, unoriginal, insufferably boring, unemployable by the likes of The State — but to characterize him as “left-of-center” is Glenn Beckian . . . in other words, Loony Tunes.
Sure, he probably had wet dreams about being allowed to rinse Saudi royal jizz out of Thomas Friedman’s porn-stache (Friedman being the type of facile writer Warthen would consider an intellectual) but the fawning nature of Brad’s devotion is redolent of junior fascist military brat and nothing even remotely left wing.

By 1st District Mapper on September 29th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
Can someone please explain why a candidate for the 1st congressional district (along the coast from Horry to Charleston County) was in Columbia speaking to a Rotary Club? Did they redraw the lines and forget to tell the rest of the state?
And why in the world did the Columbia Rotary let this out-of-district guy speak? Was the local Water and Soil Commissioner or Parks and Recreation Director unavailable?
By Max on September 29th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
The fiance is white trash? Nah, she’s hot to look at on TV most the time. I would have gone with “homewrecking gold-digger” on that one.

FITS, I do hope you are going to keep an eye on donations to tumpy’s campaign and let us know how many are from BMW and other upstate entities.

Say what you want about Carroll Campbell, the governor, but he and Iris knew how to spray their hair down.
Iris, in fact, had a hair helmet that looked like it was made out of fiberglass while Carroll’s hair was so sprayed down it never grew . . . always looked the exact same length for fifteen years.
God, I miss those days when this state’s leaders knew how to keep that hair in line. Sanford’s looks like it was parted by a four-year-old, and Lindsey’s hair screams, “Does this look gay enough to you?”
By CNSYD on September 29th, 2009 at 8:04 pm
S.D., Daddy Campbell’s hair is why I hoped he would have had the gonads to run against Fritz years ago. Acid tongue Fritz would have had a field day with it.
By Jeffy on September 29th, 2009 at 11:15 pm
1. She can’t be a gold digger…there is no gold.
2. Everyone at The State is a lefty….period.
3. “tumpy”?…..really? Seriously?
4. Henry vs tumpy ….if a tree falls and nobody is in the forest…..
5. BIN is a bored, bitter, fool.
By Calhoun Fawls on September 30th, 2009 at 1:17 am
First, let’s leave people’s fiances out of this debate. Second, Tumpy can tump tump all he wants, but I think he is a lightweight. After realizing Governor was not an option, Tumpy sought out the weakest GOP incumbent to challenge. That was not wise. If Tumpy lost the Governor’s race, he could come back, if Pappy Brown beats him, Tumpy is tumpity tump tump done.
By RedBank Bar on September 30th, 2009 at 12:31 pm
I was present when Dick Harpottlian told Mr. and Mrs. Hair Helmet there would be a bimbo eruption like Krakatoa if Carroll ran against Fritz.
Tump Tump got the same problem?
Carroll always did make Strom Thurmond look like a monk when it came to strange sex.
