An attempt to ask a government employee a simple “yes” or “no” question on public property escalated into a showdown between the “new media” and the “old guard” on Capitol Hill Tuesday morning.
Call it the “Fifth Estate” versus the “Fourth Reich,” although the winner of this particular skirmish remains unclear at this point. What is clear is that a story that may have never seen the light of day is suddenly seeping out due to what can only be described as a colossal overreaction by a Congressional staffer – and the U.S. Capitol Police.
Here’s what happened …
Shortly after 9:00 a.m. (EDT) Tuesday morning, three agents of the U.S. Capitol Police detained FITS founding editor Sic Willie – author of the Palmetto State’s most influential, widely-read political website – for nearly an hour. After grilling Sic with questions and running a background check (presumably to see if he had any outstanding warrants), the officers eventually escorted him from the Rayburn House Office Building and enjoined him from re-entering the premises under the threat of arrest.
Moments later – after Sic asked if he was being denied entry to a public building – an officer said that Sic could reenter “at his own risk.”
“(Other officers) are all going to have your picture,” the officer said.
What sort of “incident” could have spawned such a dramatic DEFCON escalation?
Well, the drama unfolded after Folks attempted to politely ask former Gresham Barrett press secretary Brecke Latham a simply “yes” or “no” question in the course of an ongoing inquiry into rumors that have been swirling in Palmetto circles for several months.
Latham, loyal FITS readers will recall, first attracted everyone’s attention after she appeared alongside Congressman Barrett in The Hill‘s “Fifty Most Beautiful People” list – an annual ranking of attractive Congressional personalities published by a Capitol Hill-based newspaper. She was ranked No. 2 on the list, Barrett No. 9. We spoke briefly with Latham regarding that article - which was the first and only time we had ever spoken to her until Tuesday morning.
The latest drama actually began with an August 11 article that was published in the Spartanburg Herald-Journal, a story in which Barrett was asked by reporter Jason Spencer whether or not he had ever been unfaithful to his wife.
Here is an excerpt from that story …
Republican U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett, in his quest to become South Carolina’s next governor, wants to focus on the future — if the past and the present will let him.
Some of the hurdles he faces aren’t specific to any one candidate …
… The Herald-Journal asked Barrett point blank if he had ever been unfaithful to his wife: “No, I have not,” he said. The couple mark their 25th anniversary later (in August).
Barrett called on Sanford to resign soon after the sitting governor admitted an affair with an Argentine woman, but he was hesitant to go beyond that …
Previously, FITS had asked Barrett’s campaign the same question about allegations of infidelity involving the Congressman – only to receive a much less cordial response.
“These types of false allegations are defamatory, and anyone who spreads or publishes them (including you and your sources) should be prepared to defend them through the legal process,” Barrett campaign advisor Jim Dyke wrote in an email to FITS earlier this year. “We will use the full power of the law to defend the character of a good man falsely accused for political purposes.”
Against our better judgment, we let the matter drop – at least until the Herald-Journal article on August 11 spawned a fresh round of information pertaining to Barrett’s alleged infidelity, information that was provided to us from an even broader network of sources. It was this critical mass of new details (and independent confirmation of those details) which put our founding editor on a plane to D.C. this morning in an effort to get a responses from several pertinent individuals.
Simply put, we were (are) very close to running a story – and had (have) reached the point in our due diligence when getting people on the record responding to certain allegations had become advisable.
And so we went to investigate after twice giving this particular subject an opportunity to speak off the record.
“Ms. Latham I need to ask you a question,” Sic said politely … except he didn’t even get the chance to state his inquiry.
Latham immediately darted back into the office of Kansas Congressman Jerry Moran – where she has been employed since October of 2008.
Moments later, three Capitol Police officers arrived in the hallway – hands on holsters. They informed Sic that there had been a “harassment complaint” against him and that they had been summoned by a Congressman’s office to investigate.
As security footage will most assuredly show, at no point during the “exchange” – if you can even call it that – did Sic Willie touch Latham, raise his voice to her, impede (or attempt to impede) her progress or set foot in her office.
Also, at no time during his extended encounter with the detaining officers did Sic raise his voice or in any way become unruly with any of them. In fact, he fully cooperated and obeyed the authorities instructions in spite of the way he was being treated (all of which may be why he’s not in a gulag somewhere right now).
Anyway, while two officers guarded Folks in the hallway, a third went inside to take Latham’s statement.
Several moments later, the visibly agitated officer – who later identified himself as Michael Miller – reemerged with a head of steam directed at Sic.
“She has no comment for you,” Miller told Sic, referring to Latham. “In fact she has made it very clear that she has no comment for you. She doesn’t have anything to do with South Carolina now so you have no business being here. You are harassing her and if it continues you will be arrested.”
Actually, Latham hadn’t made anything clear to us one way or the other. We had emailed her two or three times – in an off-the-record, information-sharing attempt – but received no response from her.
Anyway, Sic politely responded to the officer that he was on public property and that he was simply doing his job. He also said that – with all due respect – he could not accept a quote on Latham’s behalf from anyone not affiliated with her office, even a police officer.
“You want a quote?” Miller said, raising his voice. “You step foot in here again and I will personally arrest you. Michael Miller. Capitol Police. You can quote me on that.”
Sic again replied politely and without raising his voice that he was simply attempting to ask Latham a question for a story he was working on.
“You’re not a reporter, you’re a blogger,” Miller said. “(Latham) told me all about you. You’ve been harassing her.”
“This is the first time I’ve ever seen her,” Sic protested.
At that point, Sic attempted to take a photograph of the officers who were detaining him but was prohibited from doing so and an inventory of photographs in his cameras (which were thankfully empty at the time) was requested.
As Sic was being escorted from the premises, Officer Miller informed him that Latham was seeking an order of protection (i.e. restraining order) against him, which means our founding editor may actually have to come back to D.C. to appear in court over this ridiculousness.
Latham worked for Barrett’s Congressional office from July 2006 to August 2008. All we can say is attempt to interview her at your own risk …
Incidentally, FITS is currently in consultation with our attorneys to determine if any of Sic Willie’s First Amendment rights were violated by the U.S. Capitol Police.
we will use the full power of the law to defend the character of a good man falsely accused for political purposes.

Is this a great country or what? I actually get more political inside news from this site than the newspapers in the state. Just because you throw in a little humor and sarcasm should not be a reason to insult you, let alone threaten to incarcerate. Amazing what a pretty face can make a man with a badge and a gun do. Sounds like a bad case of testosterone overload. I can’t wait to see if they actually try to get a restraining order. You may be aggravating and obnoxious at times, but aren’t we all. Goes with being a married man and a daddy. Hang in there and let us know if we need to get out the Free Willie signs. They don’t want another Million Man March on DC.

Sic I’m so sick of gay ass reporters and lame ass teabagging protesters that I must say it is so refreshing to see someone actually try to get at the truth. Keep up the good work. I noticed a few questions submitted on the live blog from Barrett: (2 from “Brecke”, 2 from “Brecke Latham”, and several others using a very similar format to Brecke/ Brecke Lamtham yet different from almost all others).
But I guess they all had people stuffing the questions. (also, every poll I saw had Barrett in 5th- last place). At any rate, below are the questions:
Comment from Brecke…
Congressman Barrett: Do you expect the bulk of your funds raised to come from DC or SC contributors?
Congressman Barrett: If elected SC governor, will you be able to make use of the relationships you’ve developed in DC?
Comment from Brecke Latham…
To all candidates: If you weren’t in this race and had to choose among the other candidates on the stage with you, who would you vote for?
Can you tell us something positive about President Obama? Is there an issue you agree with the president on?

It is a tough deal, Sic. Don’t be ticked at the cops, they have bosses.
Further, the Congressional offices of a Congressman are not public property in the way that most of us think of a park, or even the capitol building. Even the FBI have to be careful going in those private offices, that whole separation of powers thing. (Remember Denny Hastert’s outrage over the FBI going into Democrat Jefferson’s personal offices.)
Stay calm and work other sources. Getting arrested will help those you are trying to expose. The officers probably thought it was bs, or they would have arrested you on trespassing.
By McFailure September 23, 2009 at 6:41 am
I’m nearly sure Barrett recieved a call, possibly from the individual you attempted to interview Sic, because he looked horrible at the debate. Watch the tape. He is finished.
It was so bad that WIS reported last night he only recieved 4% of the vote in their poll last night. Just horrible.

By southernmapart September 23, 2009 at 9:29 am
We have to read the story-to-be-written before we know the intent of this promoted “Brecke Latham” matter. Hopefully, this is not to mislead the public into thinking that another wayward politico is/has an affair with a nice-looking woman … gasp, a woman of all things.
We do know that we have male politicians who bring a required female escort to certain functions and that we have at least one state senator who has married for the purpose of obtaining his token wife.
The “token wife” syndrome was clearly evident at a recent Rotary Luncheon in the Upstate, where all elected politicians had their token wives in tow, including Gresham with his wife of 25 years. Around our area, when we refer to “token wives” we mean that either the marriage is arranged only for that purpose of obtaining a wife for public appearances, or that the marriage continues to exist for the appearance of a family lifestyle.
We don’t know where our married 3rd Congressional District congressman lives, but it certainly is not in Westminster, except an occasional overnight stay in a house on the backside of family property (we hear) the few times he is in his “home” part of the state. We usually are told that he can be found in Aiken, and sometime in Clemson.
Sic Willie probably knows how Cynthia McKinney felt after her run-in the the Capitol Police.
By Pat Hendrix September 23, 2009 at 9:31 am
Everyone is shocked that a politician might have stepped out on his wife? Grow up. In other news, the sun came up over the Atlantic Ocean this morning in Charleston.
By I spy September 23, 2009 at 9:39 am
Pat,
It’s not that we are shocked politicians cheat on their wife. It is the hypocrisy. This bozo says for Sanford to resign for cheating.
But what if he is caught cheating? Will he resign?
Sanford spanked Bill Clinton for his fling and said Clinton should be impeached. Now Sanford shows how slimy he is by staying in office.
If you are a politician and you dish it out, make sure your sheets are clean.
Taxpayers and voters are sick of the stench of the hypocrisy.
By CNSYD September 23, 2009 at 10:01 am
FITS, I hope for one moment you did not think the public is welcome in Congressional buildings. Because they are not. Why do think all the barriers are in place? To protect them from terrorists? NO. To shield them from the average American voter. If they thought they could get away with it they would not let anyone but insiders into the buildings. Did you check out the elevators? They have ones for “members only”. You paid for them but see how you rank. You want to go watch Congress in session? Well you need a “pass” that you have to get from a member. Then when you get into the gallery you hardly sit down before the gestapo tells you to leave.

Thanks for invading the lair of the elites, Sic! Ya done real good!
And, I agree with some of the above commenters in that it seems obvious that she’s covering something up.
Barrett is a simple man (in more ways than one) to psychologically profile. His arrogance and easy lies make it obvious to me that he’s self-centered enough to cheat on his wife in a heartbeat. All you got to do is keep pushing, Sic. It will all come out soon.

Spy,
I see no evidence that the public cares about hypocrisy. Everybody in SC knew that Beasley was a pun hound. Hell, that loser hit on my girlfriend in front of me while governor and was shocked when I had the audacity to say “Hey Beeez, get the hell out of here.” Wallace was just reelected. Strom Thurmond’s sexual liasons outside of marriage were legendary. The man even had a daughter from an inter-racial affair. Nobody cared. And today, you can find dozens of legislators that have girlfriends in Columbia, some younger than their children. Will Folks knows this, everyone does. I don’t see him exposing hypocrisy unless it suits his, or more likely his clients, needs. Then you have our gay politicians in SC. Now I don’t give a damn that someobody is gay – welcome to America. But I do find it odd that a party as homophobic as SCRP keeps electing gay dudes. You know who these guys are. Yet, you elect them. Yeah, I see nothing to suggest the voters care.
By scooter September 23, 2009 at 12:27 pm
Seems like Republicans are being busted a lot for being unfaithful recently. I would not even care one bit if they were not so big on “Christian morals” and telling other people what they can and can not do with their own bodies and personal lives. But I do not think that chasing a woman around to get her to tell you something is smart. Even if I had never been inappropriate with anyone, I would not want to answer questions that I probably have already answered previously. This is a little weird. If Barrett has lied, then fine. Tell that. As far as I am concerned, the more of the right wing that you can bust, the better. But make sure that you are right. I am even more sick of all of the lies and name calling that has gone on this summer and fall. Gossip is ugly and hurtful to everyone! But tell the truth when you KNOW it is true.
By WFIAA September 23, 2009 at 12:56 pm
1. Everyone needs to remember: Bloggers are not true journalists…no proof is required to legitimize their claims as it is in print media. Anyone can declare anything on the Internet. If bloggers were true journalists, they would have to produce actual facts to back up allegations.
Apparently there aren’t any facts here…if this story was legit, there should be more to go off of than just a comment from the allegedly involved individuals.
2. Has anyone considered the rights of this woman who has allegedly acted inappropriately? Does she not have the right to go to her place of business and do her job without being harassed by someone she probably already knows is out to get her? Has it occurred to anyone that she’s innocent and just doesn’t want to have anything to do with someone who is attacking her morals? She probably knows that even had she answered the question, or said “No Comment” it wouldn’t prove/disprove her innocence.
3. Someone needs to set a precedence for “news” bloggers not being able to write about whatever unfounded rumor-of-the-day they latch onto. I hope that if this is turns out to be a case of slander, this woman sues for Defamation of Character.
4. The comments in defense of this woman that were up yesterday are conspicuously absent today.

Don’t you idiots understand that if public employees can refuse to answer Will’s questions and threaten him with arrest for daring to ask them then they can do the same damn thing to everyone else? These people work for you and yet treat you like subjects. Where is your outrage?
Voltaire said it best. “I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it.”
Popular speech does not need protecting. The first amendment exists to protect those who ask difficult questions or say unpopular things.
By Laura Campbell September 23, 2009 at 4:56 pm
Hypocrisy is the crux of the issue, Pat. Exposing someone’s hypocrisy voids them of any real power or influence and often clears the path for blackmail. It then becomes a trickle-down effect. Ultimately, it ends with a state and country in the throes of utter ridiculousness and despair. Like ours.
The time spent exposing politicians for such trite issues as homosexuality and extramarital affairs could be time spent balancing a budget, fighting real crimes such as child abuse and hardcore drugs on the streets, or attracting jobs to SC, improving foreign relations, improving education, etc.
Blogs like this exist because people like Sic are simply mirroring the status quo in politics. I don’t like it, but I’m thankful for it. Furthermore, try posting your snide remarks in a msm outlet or finding similar ones to which you so readily reply. Won’t happen. They’re edited out.
Now let me know if you’re a guy or gal so I can insult you properly in return when you post your retort. I know you said something about a girlfriend, but Pat is such an androgenous name. Nor do I read all of your posts, so that’s of no help. If you’re going to be so arrongant and insulting, at least try to make it humorous.

Well this conversation has degraded quickly……….as is often the case when those that would back a candidate…learn that another GOP politician can not uphold the simple contract between a husband and his wife.
That issue of trust…or lack there of…goes to the core of any trust and requisite accountability that a politician might propose.
I have suggested in this forum a simple fidelity pledge to get this issue off the table for the self righteous – I have not been unfaithful to my marriage partner.
And for those forward thinking modern folks who feel that this type of behavior is rampant and thus accepted….I say if true…. then I want to see one politician locally or nationally run on the issue.
Please vote for me
“I am a good looking human being and although I am married or in a long term committed relationship….my partner….standing right next to me here …has agreed to allow me to engage in sexual relationships with other partners….and I of course have agreed to same”
“Now with that question out of the way please vote for my positions on other more pressing problems…. like the debasement of our currency and the massive deficit spending of our public sector because unlike other politicians I am a very relaxed and sexually satisfied human being.”
And campaign slogans for those that are unmarried.
“Hi – I am an unmarried politician …I am unmarried because I tried it and it did not work out…..or I just have not gotten married because I did not think it would work for me….as I find the other sex a tremendous drain on my brilliance and as long as I can get laid I do not see the need to complicate my life with the demands of a potentially needy other person or children ….for those concerned that my unmarried status is an indication that I pursue alternative sexual relationships ….well ….that is really my business unless you ask and say it is important to you as a exual issue and I will decide to answer that based on how many votes or voters you represent”.
Now when I see that type of sexual honesty in campaigns …I will believe this type of investigative reporting…which is what Will is doing…is no longer relevant.
Whether it is right to investigate is for history to decide.
I beleive that what is burning this State’s Oligarchs up is the simple success that Will’s approach is having in finally uncovering the secret corruption that is like a stain on this State.
And a good part of his success…ignoring his use of the equally successful and time honored British newspapers use of scantily clad women interspersed within the pages of those broad sheets…is that he is applying some pretty good journalistic safe guards to his coverage.
Whether he has over reached like BIN says is par for the course…his readers…that would be us…do not seem to mind so far…as the page views so easily prove every day.
And for the insincere folks that claim Senator Thurmond’s sexual history and it’s secrecy there in….. as a precedent…… let me suggest that history will show the Senator to be either a cowardly liar…. who might have courageously shown his young love for a black women and the eventual daughter it produced…. as a bridge to solving the racial divide in the south or he will be shown as a rapist… which is the only other conclusion that produces a child who he felt obliged to financially support.
Keep up the good work all of you at FITS and I urge all SC citizens to keep sending in the tips and information that this site can use to expose the liars within our midst.
On this last issue I say we all ask Joe Wilson…so Joe…did Strom lie.

Perhaps Sic didn’t push the envelope any further because he has a family at home. After you have kids, everything takes on a new perspective. A little one at home with a father in jail doesn’t appeal to most parents. They back off from a lot. A lot more than they would have in their single youth. Just a thought.

I totally made Brecke Latham cry in high school. She was a dumb bitch back then too. but instead of the capitol police, she tattled to her older sister (mindy, not kendra). some things never change. sweet sweet nostalgia. incidentally, she was voted miss freshman in the year book that year. pretty and dumb living together in blissful harmony!
