Those Who Forget The Past …

cuban missile crisis

In the long history of Poland getting thrown to the lions by the world’s superpowers, we had no idea that U.S. President Barack Obama had made his decision to abandon the Polish people (and the Czechs, too) on the 70th Anniversary of the Soviet Union’s invasion of Poland.

Talk about reinforcing an already scorching inferiority complex, people.  Seriously, Did Lech Walesa bring Poland this far for nothing?

Thankfully, we have our bud Charlie Speight (a.k.a. “The Garnet Spy”) to remind us of things like that – and to provide some needed historical context on the latest missile-related minutiae.

From The Garnet Spy:

Rewind Vienna. June, 1961.

The new U.S. President, John Kennedy, met with Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev to discuss a wide range of topics. One subject that was not publicized was the presence of U.S. Jupiter missiles in Turkey. The green Kennedy was pushed around by the blustering Khrushchev, leaving the president looking very weak …

… With Kennedy’s political feebleness established, the Soviet Union’s puppet regime in East Germany soon began construction of the Berlin Wall. But more dangerously, the Vienna encounter emboldened Khrushchev to bolster the new communist regime in Cuba.

Two months before Vienna, Kennedy’s Administration literally left Cuban freedom fighters to die on the beach at the Bay of Pigs. The following month, the Soviet Premier announced that an attack on Cuba would spark a new world war and the USSR was investing in the island country’s defense.

We all know what happened next … a crisis that brought the world closer to nuclear war than at any point in its history, a war which was only avoided by the doctrine of mutually assured destruction … oh, and a secret promise from the Americans to never again participate in an invasion of Cuba.

Hmmm … Kennedy-Krushchev, Obama-Putin … interesting parallel.

Incidentally, what does Walesa think of Obama’s decision?

“Americans have always cared only about their interests, and all other [countries] have been used for their purposes,” the former Solidarity leader said. “This is another example.  [Poles] need to review our view of America, we must first of all take care of our business.”

Don’t forget…the Cuban Missile “compromise” also involved the removal of the missiles in Turkey…

Walesa is not wrong, by the way. The US does and should do what is in its interests. And the Poles should do the same. The shame of the matter is that the current administration is too naive to realize that, in this circumstance, those two things are aligned.

And Bush was the idiot when it came to representing us to the rest of the world?

Looks like it is time to “reset.”

If people dont see the dark side in all of this they MUST be blind…Oh by the way…Just read that Obama now will support a News bailout…Which I am sure will be the government now being owner of major papers.Nothing wrong with that is there??

Pretty dead-on, if you ask me.

Good one, Earl. You agree then that the opposition to Obama is based on Repugnant Party politics. The article and every news source besides Faux News very clearly state the Joint Chiefs and the Secretary of Defense recommended the change.

Reagan and Junior Bush star wars fantasies do nothing but bankrupt the United States.

Why don’t we follow the Constitution and protect and defend the U.S.?

We got enough nuclear bombs to blow the world up several times over.
What we do not have is the money to go around protecting Japan, South Korea, Europe, Israel, and every other country in the world.

Let’s face the music that the days of us pretending to be the world’s policeman and big bully are over.
Unless you want to be taxed at 90% to pay for all this super spy technology, let’s protect our own borders and mind our own business.
After 8 years, we can’t even find Osama hiding in a cave.

Why don’t you read Robert Gates’ recent op-ed in the NY Times for some actual information about the missile defense in Europe? We’re not abandoning anyone. Gates is simply a man who is smart enough to recognize when a better plan comes along.

Tehran knows that if they fly a missile into eastern or southern Europe, they’ll be decimated.

Let’s say they do, just for kicks, what’s their goal? Ruining somebody’s day isn’t enough to suit them. The geo-fact is that they don’t have a lot of “lebensraum” or neighboring space in which to move.

My thoughts are that the missile shield is really set to contain the Bear.
