Jimmy Carter Says “You Lie” Outburst Was Racist

For reasons surpassing understanding, people cannot seem to stop talking about U.S. Rep. Addison Graves “Joe” Wilson, the South Carolina lawmaker who yelled “you lie” at President Barack Obama a week ago during a joint session of Congress.

Now, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter is getting into the mix, saying that Wilson’s outburst was “based on racism.”

From the AP:

“I think it’s based on racism,” Mr. Carter said at a town-hall-style meeting at his presidential center in Atlanta. “There is an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president.”

Mr. Carter, a Democrat, said the outburst was a part of a disturbing trend directed at the president that has included demonstrators comparing him to Nazi leaders.

“Those kind of things are not just casual outcomes of a sincere debate on whether we should have a national program on health care,” he said. “It’s deeper than that.”

Wait … Jimmy Carter is still alive?

Apparently so, because he took his comments a step further in an interview with the tan man (a.k.a. NBC’s Brian Williams) Tuesday.

“I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man,” Carter said. “I live in the South, and I’ve seen the South come a long way, and I’ve seen the rest of the country that share the South’s attitude toward minority groups at that time, particularly African Americans.”

Carter continued, “And that racism inclination still exists. And I think it’s bubbled up to the surface because of the belief among many white people, not just in the South but around the country, that African-Americans are not qualified to lead this great country. It’s an abominable circumstance, and it grieves me and concerns me very deeply.”

Good God, Jimmy Carter.  Did you watch Mississippi Burning over the weekend or something?

What “grieves and concerns us very deeply” is the friggin’ $14 trillion pile of debt America is sitting on thanks to the radical socialist and government interventionist policies being implemented by Obama and to a lesser extent his predecessor, George W. Bush.

Bush, if we remember correctly, was of the “honkey” persuasion. And a “Republican,” to boot … and we bashed him on a daily basis.

But hey … it’s racism now, right?

Anyway, it wouldn’t surprise us at all if Wilson – a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans – didn’t like black people very much, but we’re pretty sure he interrupted Obama’s speech because he’s tactically retarded and was quite possibly hopped up on caffeine pills at the time.

Or maybe he was just trying to redeem himself in the eyes of fiscal conservatives after he voted for the first bailout … you know, before it was laced with so-called “free market sweeteners” to lure reluctant “Republican” Congressmen.

Whatever the case, we’re pretty sure we’re ready to stop caring one way or the other …

I wonder if folks snicker much when JC is teaching his Sunday Schoolclass.

I wonder if he knows that a mother found a way to whiten teeth for under 10 bucks.

I wonder if 2010 will bring any change. I can only hope.

President Jimmy Carter awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to ACLU founder Roger Nash Baldwin, calling him “a champion of human and civil rights”.

Under the guise of protecting American civil rights, Baldwin’s ACLU has sued to;

* Halt the singing of Christmas Carols in public facilities.
* Deny tax -exempt status for Churches.
* Remove all military chaplains.
* Remove all Christian symbols from public property.
* Prohibit Bible reading in classrooms.
* Remove In God We Trust from our coins.
* Remove God from the Pledge of Allegiance
* Deny federal funding for Boy Scouts until they admit gays and atheists

Uncleshag, ain’t it wonderful how the Earth don’t look a day over 6,000 years?

And ain’t it nice how the theories of gravity and electricity stay the fuck out of our Good Book?

Yep, the Lord works in mysterious ways, but we don’t have to think about it, do we, UncleDoucheBag?

A lot of us out here in the wasteland of political South Carolina believe that the American public is being molded into a Fascist-Socialist form. Corporate fascism at the top for the elite and socialism at the bottom for the workers.

Neither works for me.

This new brand of government was structured years back and the Obama tenure is nothing more than the third term of the Cheney-Bush regime.

I’m so tired of living in the past. Jimmy Carter was an idiot in the ’70s, and he’s still an idiot. If your strongest argument is playing the race card (over and over), then you’re a pretty weak-minded individual.

By funny on September 16th, 2009 at 6:57 am

Where was all of this uproar when the Dems boo’d and yelled during President Bush’s State of the Union Address? No sanctions then, no cries of racisim (as minorities boo’d), no cries of breach of decorum.
Isnt it funny that if you oppose ANYTHING Obama that the first place anyone goes is “racist”. Yet if a minority opposed Bush there were no cries of racisim. Racism seems to be only one sided -

By laine on September 16th, 2009 at 7:28 am

Jimmy just wants a piece of the lime light. Jimmy was the worst president in America’s history. It looks like he’s got some competition now. Let’s see, Jimmy gave away the Panama Canal. Obama’s gonna’ mortgage away our kid’s future and mamma’s and daddy’s health.

BTW Jimmy, why don’t you go to Kenya and help out Obama’s brother; he literally lives in a box. Don’t you think if Obama really cared about others that he would at least send his brother some money to live in a house? I’ve worked on Habitat for Humanity houses. I appreciate your efforts in that regard, Jimmy. Let’s build a house for Obama’s brother, as Obama doesn’t seem to care that his own brother lives in a box!

By McFailure on September 16th, 2009 at 7:31 am

Wrong.

The Democrats are bringing race back into this debate becase they are losing the debate….again.

But I have news for you, you can’t guilt folks into supporting the destruction of America they way they guilted support for Obama’s initial election. You can’t and won’t fool America twice.

By rick on September 16th, 2009 at 7:45 am

Yep, I always listen to Jimmy. After all with his leadership in the white house we had American citizens held in Iran for 444 days after thugs invaded the American Consulate. We had a failed rescue attempt, 20% interest rate, and 12% unemployment(government admitted to). The steel industry went overseas, the coal industry shut down, and on and on….Yep, good ol’ Jimmy, a president’s president. Why when he speaks we all should listen, after all its not often you get to hear the first braying Jackass.

McFailure,
What debate? One side is talking about ideas on how to extend healthcare and reduce costs, the other is talking about deathpanels. That’s not a debate.

As to Carter, I don’t doubt his sincerity, but I do doubt his judgement. Sure, some people are racist has hell. You can find plenty on this blog. But the outburst wasn’t racists. It was factually incorrect, sure. It was breach of decorum, yes. It was another blight on SC, you bet. But not racist. Carter should go build houses and write books. His thoughts on these matters are not useful.

By Wilson Schmilson on September 16th, 2009 at 9:38 am

This rebuke thing stinks of political police enforcement. Yeah, Wilson was an ass. But to push a punishment like this by a socialist government like this runs into nasty parallels with the Soviet Cheka and NKVD. “southernmapart” does not go far enough with the comment about “socialism at the bottom for the workers.” Us workers will get socialism and we will be forced to like it. Websites such as this will be shut down to maintain purity of political message. The internet is next after talk radio.

Welcome to the next China … not a huge stretch since they own us via the Fed’s over-printing of money.

By jazzgrrrl25 on September 16th, 2009 at 9:49 am

wilson, as you so deftly stated, was probably hopped up on no-doze…nervous, agitated and such, not particularly rascist.

but, he had access to the speech beforehand…he knew it was coming and he threw out the shout out…i think it was a calculated move.

couple this with the ridiculously sophomoric, racist actions that have been thrown about by our officials and, well, you can see where carter could see things from this perspective…

let’s see…

we’ve got sherri goforth and her “presidential portraits”…rusty depass and his gorilla/michelle obama ancestors remark, chip saltsman and his “barack the magic negro” cd, dean grose and his watermelon on the white house lawn email, diane fedele and her “obama food stamp” email…and the list goes ever on and on.

keep in mind that all of these people, with one exception, are elected officials that should have a better sense of decorum…and, they are all republicans.

it’s enough to make one wonder.

By CNSYD on September 16th, 2009 at 10:03 am

Jimmy Carter was a great President. That is why he was reelected to a second term. Oh wait! This guy is/was a joke. Because of his boneheaded stopping of nuclear fuel recycling, we have the energy crisis we have today. He caused an almost complete recycling plant to be shuttered in SC. France has been recycling for decades. When in the White House he had a submarine base built from the ground up on the Georgia coast although most of the needed facilities already existed in SC. In order to get contracts for design and construction your firm had to be a Georgia firm or partnered with one. Good ole Georgia politics.

But of course he is playing the race game. Call a white person anything you like anytime you like but dare not speak a cross word to someone of a darker hue. BTW I forget. Is The One half black or half white?

By brian on September 16th, 2009 at 10:03 am

It may be racist or may not be racist. It does not really matter. Most Americans believe that segments of the population do not support and will never support Obama because they believe that black people are inferior to white people. Most of the people that believe this are from the south. While most Republicans are not racists and are good decent people, the problems is that most racists are Republicans and therefore tar and feather the rest of their party with this label. If the GOP had any sense at all, they would throw these bums out of their party and move on.

By Jimbo on September 16th, 2009 at 10:17 am

Carter is a class act. And he is spot on that racism is fueling a lot of the backlash and hatred for Obama.
Obama’s policies reflect corporatism not socialism and closely resemble the policies of Bush’s last 8 years.

You want proof? Look at the Federal Reserve players and the Treasury players . Look at the bank bailouts , and the favoritism to the drug and insurance oompanies. And look at the mindless expansion of the winless wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. If Barack was white, the southern rednecks would be hooting and hollaring their approval .

By CNSYD on September 16th, 2009 at 10:19 am

brian, what logic. I think I will try. Most assholes are from the North. While most Democrats are not assholes, the problem is most assholes are Democrats. Is that how it works?

Lets play a little game. Lets substitute J.C. Watts for Obama and put the Republicans in the White House. Would all these so called racist Republicans be raising hell? If they were you would not be able to hear them over all the Democrats screaming,

By Hmmmmm on September 16th, 2009 at 10:34 am

So if I call Jimmy a liar for saying this was racist am I a racist? Was Kanye a Racist because of what he did to that poor little white girl?

By brian on September 16th, 2009 at 10:44 am

While most assholes might be from the north the south sure is trying real hard recently to catch up. Assholes are in both parties but racists seem to find a home with the Republicans. JC Watts, Glenn McCall, Michael Steele and Armstrong Williams = The Black Republicans. I am sure the African American race appreciates these four tokens.

By orlando on September 16th, 2009 at 10:50 am

Racism. Go view the bus video from St. Louis of a little boy being pummelled by a mob. That’s racism. NO surprise that it isn’t being reported on NBC/CNN/MSNBC/NY Times, et al.

By CNSYD on September 16th, 2009 at 11:13 am

brian, some let me understand you. Watts, et al were only allowed in the Republican Party to give it the appearance of inclusion. That right? What other ethnic groups have they granted admission to for the same reason? What about religion? Are all Republicans of one faith or do they have tokens there also? I sure am glad that you and your Demo brothers have such a liberal view. Wish the Republicans could claim Frank, Rangel, et al.

By VS on September 16th, 2009 at 11:23 am

The revolting extreme right (which appears to be becoming the Republican base) is comparing the Obama administration to the nazis and saying that Obama wants to take over the country and destroy the democratic way. It is one thing to disagree with policy. That is everyone’s right. But to call someone Hitler or a fascist because you disagree with their policy is more than just a disagreement. There is a growing sect of the Republican party that is preaching that Obama is secretly working to abolish free elections so that he can become an omnipotent dictator. This is not reasonable. Long before Obama was ever elected scholars called this “white fear.” It is passive racism based upon the fear that the notion of “White America” will slip away because the government institutes “socialist” programs like welfare or affirmative action — giving african americans handouts and advantages they don’t deserve and creating a system where the white race is put at a disadvantage. In a nutshell, the white race becomes an oppressed race.

Having elected a black president “white fear” is matriculating. That is NOT to say that everyone that wants a smaller government or is against public healthcare or a welfare state is a racist. But to say that racism has not played a roll in the revolting extremist Republican sect is just silly. Its an overgeneralization to say its why Joe Wilson did what he did but its not hogwash either. If you don’t think that a great deal of the people that are rallying around Joe Wilson right now are racist then you are ignorant. That being said, that’s the way it always has been and to say that racism is to blame for Joe Wilson’s outburst is true but its an overgeneralization.

By CNSYD on September 16th, 2009 at 11:47 am

VS, there is no need to fear “White America” slipping away because of Obama. White birth rates are insufficient to maintain the white majority population. Birth rates in the Latino and black communities will cause population increases such that “White America” will become the new minority. Obama has nothing to do with this.

Priceless….let’s roll back the clock about 12 months and substitute these words – “the revolting extreme left”, “Bush administration”, “Democrat party”, and “Bush”. Remember “Bush-hitler”? Bush is a “liar”? Bush is a “loser”? Bush is “taking away all our freedoms”? “Bush lied, people died”? Need I go on?

And now the most ineffectual president in this country’s history who spent his career cozying up to the Yasir Arafats, communist leaders and every other two-bit anti-American dictator is saying the opposition to Obama is “racist”.

Funny.

“If my memory serves me rightly, did not Nancy Pelosi first accuse those who disagreed with her views regarding socialized medicine, Nazis?”
You’re memory does not serve you rightly.

There are a lot of accusations that say she did. But that’s another lie being told.
She was asked if the opposition was legit grass roots. She said it was astroturf.
“They’re carrying swastikas and symbols like that to a town meeting on healthcare.”
That’s what she said. That’s not “They are Nazis.”
Unlike what is being spouted on the right.
We all saw the picture of Obama, with Hitler mustache added.
Pelosi is dismissing, she’s saying they are not legit. But she said, in that quote, very conveniently clipped off very quickly on Newsmax, that they are CARRYING a Nazi symbol. That is NOT the same as calling someone a Nazi.
Don’t believe it?
Here’s a pic of someone protesting carrying a Nazi sign.
http://images.huffingtonpost.com/gen/97283/thumbs/s-FTCOLLINS-large.jpg.
That’s not all.
At Spratt’s Rock Hill one, they had a guy with a red sign with hammer and sickle that said USSA. Like the old Soviet flag if you are too young to remember.
The name-calling is asinine.

By rick on September 16th, 2009 at 1:56 pm

So Patricia does that make Jimmy right? Did he have omnipotent powers to determine that Joe deep in his heart was hating a black man? Question: which party welcomed and still welcome members of the KKK? Which party has a leading politician that just made a racial comment about an honorable police officer? Which party has spent the past 40 years convincing one segment of the populace that “poverty pimping” and laying around on you ass while others work to support you is acceptable?
Now if ya’ll haven’t figured out yet that both sides of this debate, being kept alive by the same Media that won’t cover Van Jones, Acorn, Bill Ayers et. al…and the continued name calling and yelling is what they want since it elimenates any kind of reasoned debate. All the while keeping us distracted and disenfrancised while they move on under the firestorm and carry out whatever plans the politicians have with the aid and consent of a willing news media then ya’ll ain’t pay attention. Whether South Carolina has racists or not isn’t the question, the question is “What does Jimmy and the Democratic Party” get out of continuing to beat the flames of division? What story is being moved away from a complicit media and out of sight of the American people? Why is Joe Wilson still an issue in the media unless theres an underlying opportunity to maginalize something or someone? Keep fighting among yourselves Ladies and Gentlemen, I’m sure you’ll accomplish something…I just haven’t figured out what it’ll be.

Patricia –

I, for one, am not denying the existence of southern racism (goes on in the North too, but that’s another story). What is ridiculous is the idea that people are protesting against Obama SOLELY due to race. Next to self-proclaimed socicalist Bernie Sanders, Obama was the most far-left Senator in the US Senate and with the media’s help, this country elected him.

And now that he’s blown up spending to never before seen levels, kneecapped business with the outrageous cap-and-trade nonsense and is attempting to socialize people’s healthcare (which will NOT hold down costs Pat), and people are waking up and realizing what’s going on, it’s all about race?

C’mon….try some other excuse.

But, this type of fear has been dominating the Republican party for years. And, Will, show some respect for a very great man. Pres. Joe, you ignorant, loyalist slut. Saying that race hasn’t played a part in the anti-Obama movement is like saying fat babies don’t fart. The race card is overplayed but don’t fool yourself. Joe Wilson is a racist and so are a lot of his supports. BUT the main point of my post was that race is not the central basis for the anti-Obama backlash, only a part of it.

And I know people compared Bush to Hitler. Those people were idiots and on the fringe. They were not the base of the opposition. The base of the opposition didn’t think Bush was Hitler or Stalin or some other crazy ass dictator. They thought Bush was an incompetent idiot that liked to pick fights and play cowboy. He left the GOP wounded and now the party base is rallying around idiots like Palin and idolizing bigot, elitists like Bill O’Reilly; confidants of the Bush Administration are writing books about how Bush lied by the boatload; Bristol Palin is the voice of abstinence and Rush Limbaugh is the voice of the party.

The party is simply scaring away the middle and leaving the whackjobs in charge. Now the party is like an injured wild animal, backed into a corner, desperately oozing a priori arguments and destroying the house Reagan built. I bet he’s turning over in his grave right now. So, Joe, you can use the “you did it too” argument all day long but that doesn’t make Obama Hitler, Bush smart, Bristol a virgin, Limbaugh a good person, or keep most southern republicans from being racist. Sorry, you can argue until you’re blue in the face Joe and the facts won’t change.

If you read exactly what he said, even Carter didn’t say this.
And that is a great argument, (being used by Keith Larson on WBT this morning, in fact) as a defense.
But it’s not responding to the actual point.
Carter said MOST of the opposition to Obama is because he is black. I don’t agree with the proportion, but I put the Birthers squarely in the racist corner. They are not MOST of the opposition, but they are a large chunk of it. Any congressman who signs on to the bill calling for more verification I’m throwing in the racist corner.
We had an $800 billion auto bailout under Bush, but not a peep was uttered. How many billions were put in the bank bailout. That was under Bush. It is ALL deficit spending, it is all fiscally irresponsible.
So why is OK for Bush to run up record deficits, but it’s socialism gone rampant and the end of the Constitution if Barack Obama just continues what Bush started?
Rep. Sue Myrick of Charlotte is a HUGE hypocrite on the issue. She is whining about huge deficits NOW and wanting to bring them down NOW. But when she was in the House with a Republican majority, the Senate with a Republcian Majority, with a Republican President, she didn’t care about huge deficits THEN.
The only difference is the man at the top.

By Goober on September 17th, 2009 at 9:19 am

Maybe the liberals are right. Ted kennedy’s new posthumous book referred to Carter as essentially a buffoon. Liberal commentators are referring to Carter as anti-semitic (oh the racism). Bill Clinton, now allying with Obama after being labeled racist in the 2008 campaign (Huh? How could that happen to our first black president) was furious at Carter’s lone ranger diplomacy which undermined his own authorized diplomacy.

Race relations in America can be described as four steps forward and two steps back when an incident comes up. Let’s hope JC has not taken it back five steps. Obama is shrewd in that he seeks his policies to pass however than to be derailed by the trivia of lack of decorum, intemperate responses to it, and a MSM that thrives on sensationalism and takiing their eye off the ball and focusing on what entices interest and often not our best passions.

“What hateful statements about a nice family which (sic) I am sure you do not know personally!”

And “couthe”?

Somebody went to one of South Cackolackey’s impaired school districts.

Let me guess. Teacher let you carve the half moon into the shithouse door, right?

Strom’s Daughter,
I’m not about to rattle off my extensive educational history or tout the letters behind my name. Can I please buy you a one way bus ticket back to New Jersey!? You are such a piece of trash and your mouth is vulgar. I am literally embarassed for you!

Say, EDiehl, with all that education you’ve got, what exactly is the difference between being “literally embarassed” for me and just being embarassed?

The fact is, there isn’t one.

Yep, you’re a one-person impaired South Carolina school district.
