NFL Power Rankings Are Here
Retro-threaded Tom Brady and the New England Patriots are back … but they’ll have to go through Ben Roethlisberger and the defending champion Pittsburgh Steelers if they want to reassert their dominance of the National Football League.
At least that’s the skinny from the latest NFL power rankings released by ESPN, FOX and CBS.
In their rankings, ESPN and FOX have the Steelers and Patriots ranked first and second among the 32 NFL franchises, respectively, while CBS has that order reversed – New England first and Pittsburgh second. The New York Giants came in third in all three “polls.”
How did Sic Willie’s beloved Indianapolis Colts fare? They came in fifth in the ESPN and CBS polls, but a disappointing ninth according to FOX.
By far the “biggest losers” in this week’s rankings were the Carolina Panthers, who were humiliated by the Philadelphia Eagles 38-10 in their season opener Sunday. The Panthers dropped five spots in the CBS poll (from 18th to 23rd), eight spots in the ESPN poll (from 14th to 22nd) and a whopping eleven spots in the FOX poll (from 14th to 25th).
Ouch.
Incidentally, in a football-related development that will no doubt result in some serious man-sanctions from our new “man-visor” Steve V., our founding editor Sic Willie (who is not Kyle Orton) discovered earlier today that he is the proud owner of a fantasy football team this year – a team which was auto-drafted for him and which needless to say went down in ignominious defeat in Week 1.
Seriously, people … Sic doesn’t even know which stat service his league is using!
Talk about a “manfraction!”
Way to stay on the ball there, guy.

The Ravens, my friend. The Ravens. In fact, I have it on good authority that there is Ravens gear in the Folks household.

One point over Buffalo at home with two weeks to get ready is discouraging. 11 down with five minutes to go was sickening. Thank you Leodis McKelvin. Topping the power rankings after that game is poll inertia, though no top team thumped anything this weekend, except maybe Philly. (Giving up over 20 to KC and Detroit – no thump for Baltimore or New Orleans.) Still, it’s fine living here in Massachusetts.
