Who?
A day after upsetting Rafael Nadal, a virtually unknown Argentine upset Roger Federer Monday night to capture his first Grand Slam title – and break the Swiss champion’s five-year hold on the U.S. Open championship.
Juan Martin del Potro – a lanky 6′ 6″ specimen who looks like he should be playing small forward on the Argentine national basketball team – shocked the tennis world by defeating Federer in an epic five set match, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2.
Yeah … and if we understood tennis (well, beyond the fact that Maria Sharapova is hot) we might be able to tell you what those numbers mean.
Anyway, Federer lost the match … something he had not done at the U.S. Open since a semifinal defeat in 2003. In fact, Federer had given up just two sets (see? we know tennis) to six opponents at the Open prior to dropping three sets to del Potro in Monday’s final.
Del Potro used a 138 mile per hour serve to accomplish the stunning upset over the world’s top-ranked player and holder of fifteen Grand Slam titles – a man who had already won this year’s French Open and Wimbledon championships.

Upset… yes. Unknown… well, only for someone who follows tennis one day out of the year. He was the sixth seed in the tourney as a 20yo.

That’s not fair. We follow tennis at least three days out of the year.

He was 6th seed, but at the same time, not very widely known (only 20 so hasn’t been around as long). But I think he is just coming into his game & will likely be the next person to hold #1 for a string of years.
