A family values Republican Assemblyman from California resigned his office Wednesday afternoon, one day after a videotape of him regaling a colleague with raunchy details of his sexual exploits with a lobbyist was aired on a local television station.
The scandal started back in July when Assemblyman Mike Duvall (R-Orange County) was speaking with another GOP lawmaker prior to the start of a legislative hearing, apparently unaware that his microphone was on.
Duvall proceeded to go into graphic detail to his colleague about his affair with the lobbyist, including this memorable quote, courtesy of the local alt-weekly that helped break the story:
“She wears little eye-patch underwear. So, the other day she came here with her underwear, Thursday. And? so, we had made love Wednesday–a lot! And so she’ll, she’s all, ‘I am going ?up and down the stairs, and you’re dripping out of me!’ So messy!”
Yeah, yikes.
Duvall, who is married with two children, has been described as a “consistent trooper for the conservative causes,” and a lawmaker who “has voted time and time again to protect and preserve family values in California.”
Mmm-hmm.
Of course, that’s not even the kicker …
The lobbyist, Heidi DeJong Barsuglia, works for Sempra Energy – a utility company that hired her two months after Duvall became vice chairman of the California Assembly’s Utilities & Commerce committee.
That conflict prompted Duvall’s colleagues to strip him of his committee posts and launch an ethics probe into his actions Wednesday morning, which in turn prompted his resignation later that afternoon.

“The LA Times and the AP identify Duvall’s interlocutor for his raunchy chat: Rep. Jeff Miller, also a Republican. According to the AP, when Duvall informed Miller at one point that he enjoyed spanking his lobbyist mistress, Miller asked whether she liked it too. Which seems only polite, really.”
