Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount clearly deserves a multi-game suspension for sucker-punching Boise State defensive end Byron Hout during Thursday night’s “other” football game, a Top 20 showdown between No. 14 Boise State and No. 16 Oregon. It was unconscionable, inexcusable and all those other serious-sounding words that people throw out there whenever somebody does something like this …
Blount – who Oregon coaches said had “matured” during the offseason – also deserves a swift kick in the ass for talking all sorts of pre-game trash and then laying a five-carry, minus-8-yard “duck egg” on the smurf turf in Boise, Idaho during the Ducks’ 19-8 loss. Seriously, dude. Minus eight yards?
You’re never gonna make it to the Rose Bowl like that …
Still, as much as we’d like to pile up on this young man – who apologized profusely after the game for his conduct – we just can’t. After all, in LeGarrette Blount’s case there’s a legitimate argument to be made that the guy he slugged in the face had it coming.
To the tape …
Yeah, we’re talking to you, white boy …
In fact, what’s truly ironic here is that Blount’s punch only became “suckeriffic” when Boise State coach Chris Peterson grabbed his headband-wearing wigger defensive end to tell him to stop taunting his opponents – a lesson that Oregon’s running back ended up teaching him the old-fashioned way.
Blount, though, is getting all sorts of ganged up on in the press – with even his Obama-loving hometown paper saying he should be brought up on criminal charges and kicked off the team. Easy, there Granola-lovers.
These knee-jerkers failed to recognize that the problem isn’t just Blount losing his temper – it’s the fact that the trash-talk precipitating his punch is so common in college football these days. Seriously, people. It’s amazing that something like this doesn’t happen every week … or maybe it does, and we just don’t see it on national television (albeit at 1:30 a.m. on the east coast).
Some perspective is needed, though.
The PAC-10 – which is reviewing the incident – should suspend Blount for no more than three games and then get on with life. But in our opinion the NCAA should also sit Boise State’s smack talking defensive end for three games, which would send a crystal clear message to programs across the country that unsportsmanlike taunting is going to be dealt with every bit as severely as unsportsmanlike punching.
Neither has a place in the game, but stopping the smack talk will go a long way toward curbing the extracurricular violence.
Update: Props again to Deadspin.

The issue isn’t the Boise player – it’s punching his teammate afterwards and then having to re restrained from the fans.

It’s a hate crime.

I heard that Scoresman got a tattoo after this happened.
By MAK47 September 4, 2009 at 3:13 pm
his actions after the punch warrant a suspension alone.

Blount is the one who had it coming for his trash talking before the game. He got his own words thrown back in his face, and he wasn’t man enough to take it. Whoever wrote this is just as big a fool as Blount. When you refer to a man as a boy you’re only drawing attention to your own lack of maturity, and that’s what this is all about–fools being fools. The fool who opened his mouth, the fool who reminded the fool he opened his mouth and the fool who writes about fools not realizing he’s just as big a fool as both of them. Talk about the pot calling the kettel black. Band-aide?

How stupid are you, this is not a hate crime, this is just a Thug who probably does not have the grades being allowed to play, Kick him off.

Take your racist bigotry and shove it up your ass. It doesn’t matter if Blount was Mexican or Chinese… what he did was wrong. Did Hout deserve it? Sure he did, this is how you handle things on the street, not during a football game. The field is a place of business, and you act like it. If Blount wouldn’t have sucker punched him, Hout is the one that would have looked like a dick.
I’m not even upset about him punching Hout, I’m upset with his attitude and maniac-like antics when being escorted out. Act like a professional, and leave… then reflect on what you did.

God Will you are so racist calling that white guy a Wigger. The “W” stands for white, and we know the rest. (Quote Urban Dictionary)
Spin that bit**es!!!!!!!!

What the DE did was 15 yard penalty….what blount did was a misdemeanor and punishible by jail time. Bunch of idiots writting these articles.

Go Boise State!!!
By Baldmongoose September 4, 2009 at 7:58 pm
I couldn’t help but notice that after he sucker punched the guy he was quick to get out of there before the four people holding him back 50 yards away made him want to get back into the fight. A word comes to mind beginning with “ass” and ending with “hat.”
By albrunomd September 4, 2009 at 10:17 pm
No way, what was he thinking? Is he on something? Is he losing his mind for real? Maybe he has been stressed…???

C’mon get serious. A guy trash talks before the game. then gains minus 5 yards. A d lineman gives him a little trash back for what he said and couldn’t back up.Blount deserved an earful. Don’t run your mouth, stink up the joint, then get upset when u get called on it. Blount is an idiot completely lacking in discipline.

Now that Blount is suspended for the year I hear he is looking to transfer. You hear that SOS?
By kelly September 7, 2009 at 2:15 pm
White boy and wigger? Wow. And suspension for 3 games? He tried to fight the fans after he punched Hout… But don’t worry this guy will end up in the NFL and will soon be on national tv again for domestic violence or dogfighting or shooting himself in the leg. You’re a fool.

Whoever wrote this article we are all commenting on is a complete moron. My question is this…how would this Blount a-hole respond if they were playing a real team…like my Texas. Pac-10 no defense, and he couldn’t even rush for positive yardage. The guy is a nut and needs psychological help.
