south carolina nc state preview

Eric Norwood is ready … are his teammates?

South Carolina’s star linebacker gave up a spot in the NFL draft to come back for his senior season, a decision that we would be kicking ourselves over had we made it.

Seriously, people … South Carolina enters its fifth season under embattled head coach Steve Spurrier as a four-point underdog to the N.C. State Wolfpack, a team that plays its football in a basketball conference (a.k.a. the “Anybody Can Compete” conference).  After last year’s second consecutive end-of-season collapse, Spurrier hasn’t won a championship, but he has managed to do something no other South Carolina football coach has ever done – completely drain fan support at a school known for its undying “consumer loyalty.”

The Gamecock brand is tarnished, folks … badly.

Be honest, when was the last time the University had to hustle this hard to try and sell football tickets this late in the summer?

We’ve been Gamecock fans for decades, and we can’t remember a time when it was this bad.  On the field or off it.

While short on talent, though, tonight’s match-up is long on drama.  NC State wants revenge, and wants it in the worst possible way.  In last year’s 34-0 USC victory, South Carolina knocked the Wolfpack’s star quarterback, Russell Wilson, out of the game – prompting one Gamecock fan to give him a less-than-gracious salute.

And just to make sure N.C. State fans haven’t forgotten the outcome of that contest, here’s a screen shot from the official Gamecock website taken just hours before tonight’s kickoff …

Nice …

So what’s your prediction for tonight’s game?  Sic says 24-20 South Carolina, but in all fairness he’s still suffering from the ill effects of his recent bout with swine flu.

The outcome of tonight's South Carolina-NC State game will be ...

  • ... USC narrowly winning (41%, 50 Votes)
  • ... NC State narrowly winning (29%, 35 Votes)
  • ... a Wolfpack blowout (16%, 19 Votes)
  • ... a USC blowout (15%, 18 Votes)

Total Voters: 122

If the ACC is an anybody can compete conference, then why did usc east leave to go and become non competitive in the SEC? How has the compettion with the state school who is in the ACC been the last 12 or so years?

USC 24
Pack 19

USC 31
NCSU 20

Brian Maddox gets his 100 yards rushing and Garcia gets his 250 in the air. Defense gets a score and sets up the Offense for at least one in close. We have no turnovers and the Pack turns over two. And yes, their QB streak of no interceptions comes to an end. The WildCock Offense gets off to a fast start when it is finally unveiled. No greater aspirations and expectations than those of a Gamecock fan. Pass the bottle one more time.

Commonman and not sayin, thanks for the insight. I don’t need to watch now since the outcome has already been laid out by you guys.

Is minnie-me still on the team? I heard on good authority that the AD will be interviewing Joe Paterno as a possible replacement in case Lou Holtz refuses to return.

old bike dude, don’t forget Bobby Bowden. FSU wants to unload him in the worst way and he too fits the usc east age requirement.
