“Jo Bear” Says No To USC Research
For those of you who missed it, five weeks ago our founding editor became the (obsessively) proud father of Johanna Elyse Folks, who is clearly the smartest, most beautiful baby ever.
In fact, both Sic Willie and “Shorty” have been forced to drop their longstanding “Boys Rule, Girls Drool,” policy, even though the little “Jo Bear” does drool quite a bit.
Anyway, earlier this week we received the following in a letter from a professor at the University of South Carolina’s Psychology Department …
I understand that you may have an infant or a young child. I would like to describe some interesting research being conducted in the Department of Psychology at the University of South Carolina on the development of attention in young children.
Ever the quick wit, Mrs. Sic immediately volunteered her 34-year-old husband for the experiment.
“They said ‘infant or a young child,’ right?” she laughed. “Well …”
A representative of the Psychology Department could not immediately explain how the University of South Carolina came to be aware of the birth of the “Jo Bear,” as Sic did not authorize the release of any of Jo’s personal information to school.
The representative said the school may have found out about Jo’s birth “in the paper.”
“That’s my assumption at least,” she said. “Or we may have found her on one of the hospital web sites, that’s where we usually look.”
Asked whether she wanted to get paid $30 to be poked and prodded by University researchers, Jo spit up … which we took as a “No.”

We are fools to believe that any patient information is confidential. When all this info is digitized your info will be everywhere. Welcome to the matrix. Have they taken her cord blood and done a genetic assay on it? Are you sure about that answer?

We did that with our first child. But it was only a T-shirt and not cash money. They measure brain waves with and without a TV on. That’s all.
