Resignation Rumors Continue To Swirl

S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford was on the front page of the state’s largest newspaper Thursday outlining his priorities for the final seventeen months of his administration – but sources close to the Palmetto State’s increasingly embattled governor say that for the first time he is contemplating resigning his office.

“He is beginning to see the writing on the wall,” a Sanford confidant told FITS, adding that “the writing says, ‘resign.’”

Another Sanford advisor hotly disputed that contention, however, parroting previous press accounts to the effect that the governor contemplated resignation shortly after disclosing his affair with Argentine lover Maria Belen Chapur – but then decided against it.

“He will serve out the remainder of his term and there’s nothing the rumor-mongers in Columbia can do about it,” the source said.

In a story in The State newspaper, the governor also denied that he is contemplating moving Chapur into the Governor’s Mansion, although he refused to answer questions about whether or not he was still communicating with her.

A Sanford resignation would elevate S.C. Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer to the governor’s office … a prospect which almost makes the going Sanford circus tolerable.

Almost.

Should S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford resign?

Why does everyone keep bringing up this crap about “let’s keep Sanford in because Bauer would be worse”. The people of South Carolina spoke when they voted him in knowing good and well that the Constitution says he moves into the number one seat should the Governor not be able to fulfill his duties. Its plain and simple, they have elected him to that post twice. In the latter, Bauer was busted up on crutches, outspent 3 to 1 by Cambell, and endorsed by Bush SR. as well as the first lady. South Carolina’s voting populous still gave him the reigns. Obviously if people thought he could not make a good Governor, they would not have put him as number two in succession. Don’t get me wrong the guy has had a couple of speeding run ins that people want to beat him up for, but do you really think that speeding in the least bit compares to what Sanford has done and the laughing stock that he has made our state. The people of SC voted for Andre knowing good and well that he would hop in if needed, and its obvious that we need somebody new.

If he loves his sons, he should quit…even if he hates Jenny.

If the ONLY reason for Sanford to stay in office is to keep Bauer out of the governor’s office, then there is no good reason for Sanford to stay.

Sanford is dying politically and he is doing all he can to take the rest of the reform movement with him.

Too often, messengers think THEY are the message. Governor, you were a means to an end.

Please stop hurting the principles you claim to believe in.

    Leave.

Why all the HATE? I laughed when Luv Guv talked about blood in the water, but he might have been on to something. I am sure that most people in SC understand that the man got bit bad by the South American Love Bug. Shit happens, that’s life. But beware the political elite and their henchmen, they are true sharks who smell blood and are trying to go for the kill. Better to aim your harpoon at the sharks, and leave the love sick homeboy alone.

The story about Chapur moving into the mansion was an obvious Jenny plant to take this thing over the top. Stir up the religious base and public w/ salacious rumors about the Governor living in sin with his girlfriend. She knows the only reason he needs her (Jenny) is to save his job. Once he’s out of the governorship, he’s gone. Jenny is hoping to get him in a panic to stay on and he will need her to do it. If she can get him to stay on as Governor for the next year and half, Jenny is hoping that Ms. Chapur, if not Mark, will have “moved on” by the end of his term. It’s a pathetic, desperate move on Jenny’s part and, frankly, it should be beneath her.

MkinVA, there are many people who hate Sanford and his “former staff” seem to hate him as well..I wouldnt be too quick to presume Jenny planted the rumor..It could have been Sawyer who just got plain disgusted with his boss. Sanford is such a babbler, he must be talking to the janitor there.
Its funny, but all the inside info rumors posted by Charleston Pam have been completely wiped off from the State comemnts section. Also, didnt CPam mention that Sanford would have a tryst with Maria when he is in “duty”..well, he is in duty this weeknd, in Miami!!

McMaster requests ethics investigation on Sanford travel

S.C. Attorney General Henry McMaster today asked the state Ethics Commission to investigate allegations that Gov. Mark Sanford misused state planes and other potential violations of state ethics laws.

McMaster said Section 89.27 of state ethics law says that violations of the proviso governing the use of state aircraft “is prima facie evidence of a violation of (the State Ethics Act) … and shall subject a state official to the applicable ethics procedure relating to them as provided by law.”

Earlier today, state Senate President pro Tem Glenn McConnell, R-Charleston, said the Ethics Commission or S.C. House should investigate Sanford’s activities.

Sanford has GOT to be contemplating resignation. If indeed, Maria is in the vicinity, I just don’t see how he can keep it quiet. Her Jenny-ness will likely haul out one of her little friends to “prayfully and thoughtfully” admonish her husband, yet again, in the press. ugh…do the SC taxpayers keep on wanting to be in this Ground-Hog Day scenario?!

Well the Eagles took Michael Vick off the plate as a replacement, so how much do Andre allies continue to push and how much do GOP house and senate hiearchy hope to have a Sanford lame duck rubber stamp?

First, Mark Sanford should have resigned immediately. It shows lack of character that he didn’t. However, Andre Bauer as governor genuinely gives me chills. Do you honestly believe Bauer will refrain from running for Governor in 2010? I do not. This is all just politics..and not very honest politics… as usual. Bauer is a greedy opportunist. Just ask the people of the district he was senator of before he ran for Lt. Governor. And with that well known temper of his, he should rise no higher in office. So honestly, I would really rather Sanford serve out his term as a lame duck than face the prospect of Bauer as governor.
