Sanford: “My Political Career Is Over”

For a guy trying desperately to hang onto his office, S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford sure has a strange way of making his case to the people.

At an appearance Wednesday morning at the Twin City Rotary Club in Batesburg-Leesville, S.C., Sanford told the audience that “the next eighteen months are not about Mark Sanford, my political career is over.”

Really?

Then why did Sanford blast out yet another “apology letter” to his national fund-raising list last week?

And why is he arguing the finer points of what appear to be cut-and-dried violations of state travel policy?

Ever since the news of his extramarital affair with Argentine lover Maria Belen Chapur broke in late June, Sanford’s situation has gone from bad to worse to hopeless to bad again to worse again …

All the while, the scrutiny, the inconsistencies and the hypocrisies … all of those things continue to mount.

Don’t get us wrong, the prospect of a long, sustained Sanford meltdown is great news for us – after all, Internet traffic has never been better!

But is that really what’s in the best interest of South Carolina?

As a Kansan, from afar, I am so puzzled by Sanford’s actions. He had it all–he was set for a presidential run–a lovely supportive wife and handsome sons. So he chucks it all for some Argentinian divorcee? Please, get real, Mark. What were Maria’s motives, we might ask??

Obviously, Gov Sanford has been infected by a virulent strain of the South American poontang virus.

Early symptoms are lack of brain functioning, aimless rambling about religious visions, and a perverse feeling of invincibility.

“Then why did Sanford blast out yet another “apology letter” to his national fund-raising list last week?” You know exactly why. He needs to redeem himself just to the extent that maybe a couple of years down the road some pol will appoint him to something. “Retired” public officials don’t spend their twilight years sitting in a porch rocker. Especially one as young as Sanford. They get appointed to boards, colleges, judgeships, foundations, and the like. People say they want to preserve their legacy, when what they really mean is they want a cushy appointment down the road. At the very least, he wants a spot at one of those conservative think tanks where he can ponder the world as he sees it and pretend he is still relevant. I’m betting he’ll be teaching economics at university in Buenos Aires.

He will probably rebound and have as great or even greater political future. The people will be nostalgic, as he was one of the great leaders who came to light after the dark days following 9/11 and helped put the country on the right path. He will be considered as someone who protected and kept safe that most important piece of real estate, South Carolina, from the extremists who wish to do us harm. He can cry on TV and talk about ‘Jesus’ while walking down the government-funded public nature trails thinking of ways to keep federal funds out of the hands of his South Carolina constituents. He will be seen as a pillar of the community and as another King David, who also made a mistake. Remember that he’s already called himself that. He will not have to worry about his future. It’s too bad the people of South Carolina can’t have that luxury. Rest assured, they’ll vote for him and voice their support for him and even vote to send him to Pennsylvania Avenue if they can get a way to the voting booth when they don’t have a car to get there.
