Sources: Sanford Had D.C. “Love Nest”

dc at night

As the myth of S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford continues to publicly unravel, one of the governor’s former Congressional staffers is now telling FITS that Sanford’s oft-repeated claim to have “slept on a futon” in his Congressional office is not true.

Or at least not completely true.

Specifically, the governor is said to have stayed in an apartment in Washington D.C. that was paid for by private sources.

Did he ever bring a woman other than his wife, First Lady Jenny Sanford, to this “love nest?”

“Yes,” our source said flatly. “I have personal knowledge (of that).”

Independent sources have confirmed to FITS that a private, undisclosed residence was “maintained” for Sanford during his six years in the nation’s capital, although they declined to elaborate on what may or may not have transpired there.

Sanford has long told his family – and constituents – that he slept on the futon in order to avoid Washington corruption and to save taxpayers money.

The latter point we’ll grant him – as Sanford returned tens of thousands of dollars to the U.S. Treasury each year by refusing a housing allowance provided by the taxpayers for members of Congress. Additionally, several other former staffers have attested to seeing Sanford on the futon when they left work late at night and again when they arrived for work the following morning.

“It’s not a myth, he really slept there,” one former staffer told FITS.

But did he sleep there every night?

“I don’t know.”

After being caught lying about his whereabouts last month, Sanford admitted that he had been unfaithful to his wife with Argentine lover Maria Belen Chapur. He later called Chapur his “soul mate” and said that he was trying to “fall back in love” with his wife. He also admitted that he had “crossed lines” with other women in the past – but that each of these “line-crossings” occured before he first met Chapur in 2001, he said.

So who paid for Sanford’s alleged “love nest?”

Sources have thrown a few names out there, but at this point it is unclear.

One thing is clear, though. In addition to having yet another of his myths exploded, if these allegations prove true Sanford could be in hot water legally for failing to disclose the arrangement.

What is wrong with you FITS? When you have been chosen by God you are automatically exempt from laws, rules, etc. To borrow from the “Queen of Mean” laws and rules are for the little people.

Perhaps it was on C-Street…

By madcock on July 27th, 2009 at 10:45 am

We all paid for it as taxpayers.

The C Street cathouse has a property tax exemption as a friggin’ church.

Follow the money. Someone paid. Maybe one of his “funds”.

If these allegations prove true Sanford could be in hot water legally for failing to disclose the arrangement.

Will anyone care now that he’s not a fed employee?

the comment praising your symbolic pic is only half right. of course the obelisk is a phallic symbol, but also, the moon is the symbol of female power/sexuality. the initiated understand these symbols.

Doesn’t it seem weird that congresspersons can actually use their office as a home?
It seems odd to me that as a regular practice elected officials would be sleeping on sofas and futons.

Who provides the sheets, where is the laundry washed and stored during the day, who does the laundry?

The practical aspects of Sanford’s sleeping arrangements are wacky when you really stop to think about it.

I don’t think he ever stayed at C-street…

By Liberty for me on July 27th, 2009 at 5:00 pm

Lets keep talking about this bullshit as we lose our country to facism…Wake up people!!!

By SC Moderate on July 27th, 2009 at 5:15 pm

Let’s look at this logically- I’m sure he did sleep on the futon when it was convenient for him (a recurring theme), as Congress often has strange hours when in session. So there were times when this was the easiest route to take.
But in true Sanford fashion, he turned this convenience into an opportunistic shield. After all, if he is known as the hard working boy scout- then he has free reign to do what ever he wants free of public suspicion.
I noticed the article said his family was unaware of the love nest… So he has been lying to his wife for quite a while. (He makes John Edwards look like a Saint in the affair department… after all Edwards at least made it to 50 before cheating). Whereas Sanford seems to fall into the Clinton style serial cheating category. But at least Clinton left out the hypocrisy and did not profess to be a choir boy- of sent from heaven above. Along the same lines- this was during the time that Sanford was calling for Clinton and Republican Senator Livingston to resign for “breaking the law to their wives.”
I can just see him now> Stopping by the secretive C Street brothel to pick his lady of the night. Then returning to his secret Corporate hideaway. Then Rounding the bases. Then now that his day is almost over, we find him propped up in his love nest, writing tomorrows speaking points for condemning those… immoral souls who would dare to break their sacred vows. (Maybe he got the birdette of the night to proof read).
He really is appearing more and more like a clinical Sociopath.

Excuse me, but our Governor and “Liberty” [is that you, Guv?] want us to stop talking about this and move on. It’s over people. [Damn, don't they have paparazzi in France snapping photos of the happy first family cheering on Le Tour & dunking real croissants in their real lattes?]

OTOH, maybe all that extending marriage to same-sex couples has hurt the sanctity of his marriage.

God help us! Oh, wait. Should I pray to God or Sanford these days, as Sanford has all but claimed himself the almighty? Careful governor, remember Wako?

I’ll trust my instincts and choose the good lord himself. Sanford’s on vacation ONCE AGAIN anyway!!!!

By Joke on July 27th, 2009 at 7:30 pm

A European vacation in the middle of a recession, and in a state with–among other low points–high unemployment, no job prospects, one of the highest poverty rates in the nation, and following these hypocritical, personal scandals is like a bad joke. At a time of need, the guy went AWOL, again and again. His personal life is completely irrelevant to the job he swore an oath to uphold.

Here is the SLED report…Sanford books a ticket for his wife and himself to NY, then CANCELS his and rebooks it so that he can meet his mistress a day before his wife arrives. Sick.

A good post from the State about his love trysts with Chapur…

“It seems Mark Sanford has left a tell tale pattern as to when he was planning on trysting with his Argentinian prune. If you look at his travel records, he would book on a certain date only to change either the arrival or departure date later on. The changes were indicative that he was meeting Chapur in there sex nest of choice , New York City or the Hamptons.
In the public released records, there are also a couple of personal trips that Sanford made where he changed his itinerary to include last minute changes of cities where he was originally planned to arrive. For instance there is a 2008 trip where he brought a round trip tix from Charlotte to Chicago and back only to change the return trip to Newark. Was he meeting Chapur again then?
Dept of Homeland Security needs to check Maria Chapur’s US travel records. I have the feeling that there have been other trysts with Sanford beyond what the 5 that he admitted.”

A great youtube: Pick the Real Miss SC…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PabbdI3scTs

This famous cnn interview showing Sanford looking like a deer in headlights over a subject that is supposed to be his wheelhouse was conducted in early July 2008. You have to wonder if Sanford was preoccupied thinking about the slim chance that CNN may pull a quick one and ask about Maria.

I was not able to find anything on fitsnews regarding thoughts about C-Street (regarding possible corruption, lack of transparency, tax status, etc).

It seems there are many angles relevant to issues important to this site, that warrant a bit of coverage and discussion (good or bad).

By shiya on July 29th, 2009 at 12:41 pm

Someone at the State website speculated if Sanford and his wife actually used their earlier vacation to shop for schools outside the state. There has been speculation that Jenny is looking for schools outside the state. If so, I would guess those would be in states close to SC. Notice that the oldest boy doesnt seem to have gone on the trip to Europe.
