Nectar Of The Gods

makers mark

It’s been more than three years since our founding editor sucked down his last Makers’ Mark adult beverage … hell, it’s been three years since he’s consumed any alcohol (well, not counting communion wine).

Bummer, we know.

Of course, Sic does keep a fifty milliliter mini-bottle of the ninety proof nectar at his office desk “just in case I know I’m gonna die,” he says.

Once an alkie, always an alkie, we guess.

Anyway, as much as we are all grateful for Sic’s sobriety (some people more than others), it’s obvious that the straight handmade bourbon whiskey – distilled and aged at Star Hill Farm in Loretta, Kentucky – will always hold a special place in his heart.

After all it was under the influence of Maker’s Mark that Sic scored with his first TV reporter and State House lobbyist, and it was during an all-night Maker’s fest at the old stomping grounds (a.k.a. Durkin’s Bar) that he shot his personal best Golden Tee score.

What was it?

No one knows … he was too drunk to swipe his card.

Anyway, people often ask Sic, “is it hard not drinking?”

Usually, the answer is “no,” he says. Sic goes to parties and receptions all the time and doesn’t imbibe, and the lovely Mrs. Sic notes that one non-alcoholic O’Douls each weekend is more than enough to wet her husband’s beer whistle.

But there’s something about the thought of all that Maker’s Mark that appeals to an alkie’s brain … something that just makes you want to go swimming, doesn’t it?

Mmmm … yummy!

I recall the 15 year aged MM from the 70’s. I got hooked on the Mountain Dew chaser. Left a big “mark” at a bosses wedding and chatted for three hours with an inebriated Jerry Lee Lewis at a club in Printer’s Alley while under the effect.

After pulling an Anders, a Myers and a Giese, I wised up.
Good thing, too as I was headed straight for a Sanford.

Keep that wax intact, Will. Our time will come soon enough.
We don’t wish to see our Maker, “Makered up”. Do we?

Besides Blantons is much better

By sunnyvaleboy on July 21st, 2009 at 4:50 pm

Blantons is very good $30.00 bourbon sold in a $30.00 bottle.

Keep up the sanity, Sic One.

You aren’t missing a thing, based on what MM conjured up for a friend of ours last Saturday.

Surely it hurt — I know it was painful to watch!

Been a fan of Maker’s Mark forever, but iIn March 2008, I was lucky enough to find myself in the Old Seelbach Bar (http://www.seelbachhilton.com/history_celebrities.html) in Louisville, Kentucky, where I paid about $15 for Blanton’s (http://blantonsbourbon.com/Bourbons.aspx) on the rocks. Pretty smooth stuff, and I think you can get the 750 ml bottle for around $50 or so. Even smoother is Woodford Reserve (http://www.woodfordreserve.com/Default.aspx).

If you ever fall off the wagon, try to land on one of those.

Tim,

Telling sic(k) will “if you ever fall off the wagon” is like telling Lassie “if you ever chase another dog bone.” Don’t be fooled.

sic(k) willie loves him some cheap stuff as much as the M.M.

As for him being “dry” for 3 years. Just like markiemark has been a good steward of taxpayer money and a stand up hubby for the last 3 years.

Morons.

wow, Tim… you’re genius…almost. The Seelbach is great. But Blanton’s is truly the nectar of the gods. I was a religious Woodford Reserver, espeically after visiting their kickass hq near Louisville…But Blanton’s even makes you want to through rocks at Woodford Reserve. And, btw, Sic, I had 2 Bud Lights before lunch today.
