SC BIPEC used to be the “Go To” organization for business in this state. It was a well-oiled machine and had the creme de la creme serving on their board and chairing their committees. Unfortunately, like the SC Chamber of Commerce, it now has bureacratic overtones and leaders who are on the lower rungs of the corporate ladder.

How would you say this year is any different from the previous scorecards? The scorecards have always cherry-picked votes, many of which were just as ludicrous as this year. By the way, the livestock bill, S.453, is a textbook example of bobtailing, as it violated the single-subject rule… and is why it was vetoed. If BIPEC managed to overlook that fact, then they either don’t know what they’re doing, or they are grading the legislators first and then finding the votes to match. Probably both.

SCBIPEC’s board and its legislative committee are dominated by lobbyists, or the people who hire lobbyists. No one should be surprised that their scorecard rates votes on bills that are important to their organizations. I don’t think anyone pays attention to them, although legislators used to.

The BIPEC numbers are definately skewed to favor leadership. Which to Bobby Harrell and Glenn McConnell has been their objective for several years. Win over a business agenda organization like BIPEC that you can claim strength and victory. To their and Tom DeLoach’s benefit it has worked.
However, it has chipped away at the creditbility of BIPEC. Reviewing this years standings definately shows motive and raises questions as to what is good and viable business legislation. I can tell you it is one without STRINGS and one that ACTUALLY WORKS for businesses.

If you want to see a scorecard designed with an agenda, check out the SC Club for Growth.

They design their scorecard to give poor grades to those on Sanford’s enemies list.

Face it…until these organizations commit to oppose Sanford staying in office then the SC reform movement is dead.
