“Cushion Some Of The Blow?”

It looks like Vice President Joe Biden isn’t the only one in his office with “foot in mouth” disease.

Biden’s chief economic advisor (uhhh … why doesn’t the Vice President just use the President’s economic advisor?) said yesterday that the “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act”  – a.k.a. the “stimulus” – wasn’t really designed to recover, reinvest or stimulute anything.

What was it supposed to do?

“Cushion some of the blow.”

Say what?

That’s what Biden top economist Jared Bernstein told Reuters yesterday after the Federal Reserve forecast that the U.S. unemployment rate would remain above 9.5% through 2010.

Sure it’s not as bad as Biden’s now famous “we misread the economy” remark, but statements like this one (which are in stark contrast to all the pre-stimulus promises President Barack Obama made) make us wonder just how many votes this bureaucratic bailout would have gotten had our “leaders” leveled with us instead of regurgitating a bunch of “change-blah-teleprompter-blah.”

Remember, this is a liberal wishlist of agenda-driven government spending that passed with almost no debate – a 1,000-page piece of sh*t … err, legislation … that only one Congressman appears to have even tried to read in its entirety.

Frankly, we’re not even remotely surprised that the “stimulus” isn’t working. After all, it was never a “stimulus,” it’s always been a bureaucratic bailout.

As we said upon its passage five months ago:

It’s supposed to be an “economic stimulus,” but even a cursory look at the $787 billion boondoggle that President Barack Obama is signing tomorrow reveals that it’s anything but.

It is, quite simply, the worst possible response to our current economic crisis that America could have come up with – making its taxpayers fund an unprecedented bailout of failed bureaucracies at every level of government with money we don’t have.

And yet that’s exactly what’s happened, as “change we can believe in” has turned into nothing more than pouring of hundreds of billions of dollars into the same old government sinkholes.

Yeah … like we said.

You don’t stimulate economic recovery or reinvestment with a two-year government bailout. In fact, that’s how you drain the economy of the resources it needs to create jobs and raise income levels.
