barrett money

U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett is the man to beat in the money race for S.C. Governor’s Mansion, raising a whopping $750,000 in contributions over the last three months.

Barrett has raised $1.1 million since announcing his campaign for governor earlier this year, but he’s also spent $150,000, leaving him with $975,000 on hand. Barrett also has $500,000 in his Congressional account, which he can transfer with the permission of those donors.

Barrett’s strong numbers for the second quarter dwarfed those put up by one of his main Republican rivals, S.C. Attorney General Henry McMaster.

McMaster, widely presumed to be the front-runner in the race, had a disappointing second quarter with only $230,000 in new contributions flowing into his Attorney General account. Letters have already gone out to McMaster supporters asking them to authorize the transfer of their contributions to his as-yet-unformed gubernatorial account.

McMaster also spent $115,000 this quarter – or half of what he raised. That’s an exceptionally high “burn rate,” or percentage of money spent versus money raised, although McMaster still has $1.1 million on hand.

The third so-called “top tier” candidate in the 2010 GOP race, S.C. Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, has yet to report his second quarter fundraising totals. Bauer had $500,000 cash on hand at the end of the last reporting period.

S.C. Rep. Nikki Haley, a favorite of fiscal conservatives, raised just over $200,000 for the quarter.

If the bozos you named are the “top tier”, I would hate to see the bottom tier.
