If you’re looking for predictable sound bites but precious little in the way of intelligent, implementable policy, then boy oh boy do the Laurens and Newberry County (S.C.) Republican parties have an event for you.
This September, the Newberry Opera House will play host to the “First in the State GOP Gubernatorial Debate,” an event that will no doubt test the limits of you political gag reflex.
Seriously, people … this is the sort of bloviation-fest that you’ll want to watch on an empty stomach. Well, assuming the various self-important GOP operatives who work for these candidates can agree to “debate rules” that permit intellectually incurious mainstream media reporters to trade politically-correct social commentary in exchange for meandering, possibly unrelated “responses.”
Anyway, Newberry County GOP Chairman Chad Connelly and Laurens County GOP Chairman Bobby Smith say they have commitments from “all six of the reported potential candidates for the GOP gubernatorial nomination,” which at this point would be – alphabetically-speaking – Congressman Gresham Barrett, Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, State Sen. Larry Grooms, State Rep. Nikki Haley, Attorney General Henry McMaster and Furman professor Brent Nelsen.
And if there were any doubt that this is a money-making proposition, sponsorships are being sold for a private reception with the candidates an hour before they take the stage.
Oh, and tickets … they’re selling tickets.
The debate will be held on September 22, 2009 at the Newberry Opera House in Newberry, S.C. For more information, click on the link below.

Folks:
This is very good news!
Congratulations to Chad and Bobby.
The Spartanburg County GOP did this in late August 2001 and it was a huge success. We had about 300+ people attend and it was a major fundraiser for the County GOP. The PRESS attention also gave us a leg up on the DEMS.
The end result was a huge GOP victory in Spartanburg in November 2002!
Again, great plan and good luck!
Please let me know if I can assist you with some of the history of our event. (864-590-7723)!
Kudos!

I don’t know why you would be surprised that they will be selling tickets. I would think that most people would agree that politics in this state should be followed mainly for its entertainment value.

A huge GOP victory in Spartanburg? Is there another party there?

1+1=3: You say that like it is a bad thing. SHE is the one we should have had the last 6 years.

Is the purpose of this meeting to demonstrate how a wind turbine can operate in the area or is it to power hot air balloons?

Todd, what are you smoking? She has been the one you had for the last 6 years. She was the wizard behind the curtain. The only thing she didn’t control was Maria.

Actually I think this might be just another sleazy Amway sales presentation where we see just how dumb the attendee’s really are. Then there is an after-party where the Amway presenter finds Jesus.

Pay for tickets to a debate? Wow It should be based on the same premise as those people who get the “You won a free boat” notice from the DA’s office, only to be presented with an outstanding warrant and handcuffs. In this case, they should cull anybody who pays to watch this farce.

I agree Patricia – we should follow President Obama’s town hall “formula” just pack the place with moveondotorg retards.
BTW…Did anyone bother to find out why someone working for the Democrat National Committee (how many gazzillions of dollars flow through that cess-pool) not already have health insurance to take care of her tumor?

Do you think they will tell us how they are God fearing Christians, standing for transparency, fighting terror, supporting strong family values, and making government more efficient?
And the minions will applaud and believe it all.
