South Carolina’s political world has been turned upside down S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford’s headline-grabbing sex scandal … and the new rules it has imposed on those of us who cover and comment on Palmetto politics.
Long story short, S.C. politicos are leaking stories left and right in the hopes of airing their rivals’ dirty laundry. And with La Socialista (a.k.a. The State newspaper) printing the intimate emails between the governor and his lover, everything is fair game.
In fact, FITS is chasing several of these stories as we speak …

How about we agree that everyone has sex and stop passing laws about it. Then the social conservatives aren’t hypocrites, and you don’t have an excuse to go on witch hunts into people’s private lives. The only way this is relevant is if you’re a bible-thumping legislator or a family council type advocating for restrictive social policy.

Will – I’ve really tried on my blog to not beat a dead horse re Sanford, even though it would be understandable that, after all the shots his camp has taken at me, I would want to rub it in. But I don’t think airing the trash is going to help anything. If anything, it’s going to make people even more cyncial and less willing to get behind efforts to make this state a better place.
Scandals may sound fun to air, but in an era where companies looking at coming to SC can easily Google and see the trash that gets put out, what does it accomplish?
There are lots of stupid people in Columbia. Lots of them fall prey to the good times once they get up there. That’s one reason why I’m thankful to have a good job in the private sector.
Playing vendetta games to drag everyone else down isn’t going to accomplish anything productive. I’ve learned that those who act in bad faith end up sowing the seeds of their own downfall. If someone wants to act like a jerk, it tends to catch up with them, and you’ll seldom have to lift a finger to make it happen. Time is like rope – give them enough and they’ll hang themselves.
Over the years, I’ve come to learn that living life for revenge or to score points is hollow. Sit back, watch them screw themselves and laugh your ass off. It’s less work and more entertaining.
