Reneging on a previous agreement, S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford is now declining to release personal travel and financial records which he claims provide proof that he did not use taxpayer resources to facilitate his affair with Argentine lover, Maria Belen Chapur.
Sanford steadfastly insists that no taxpayer dollars were used to facilitate his multiple visits with Chapur, a woman with whom he carried on an eight-year relationship that he says turned romantic a year ago.
From the AP:
South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford has backed out of a promise to release personal financial records proving he did not use state money for trips to see his mistress …
… Sanford agreed this week to provide the AP with proof of his payment for trips to New York and Argentina to see her.
His staff first said the records might be made available Tuesday, and then the governor’s spokesman said Wednesday Sanford would not release them.
Uh-oh.
We would say that this reversal on releasing personal financial records moves Sanford’s political positioning from “bad to worse.”
As it is, though, we’re going to have to go with “worse to worser.”
UPDATE – Sanford spokesman Joel Sawyer tells FITS that the governor has provided all of his personal travel information to SLED, which is the agency conducting the preliminary investigation at the request of S.C. Attorney General Henry McMaster.

uh uh uh uh NO! NO! NO! …you can’t see them.
uh uh uh …my Delta SkyMiles account still has miles left on the account ..and …uh uh uh …and I still want to use them …uh uh uh …
…you see, the trip that I made to Argentina that YOU paid for …I…I …uh uh uh …I got frequent flyer miles from that trip …then, I used those miles to fly to New York, then …I …I uh, used those miles to fly to the Bahamas, then, I…I …used those miles to fly to Germany then to Brazil and Argentina again. Dang, after that, I had enough miles to fly to China, Tibet, Thailand and stop over in Aspen Colorado before returning back to South Carolina.
uh uh uh …do do you? Are you beginning to see how all this works?
Hey, you guys stay out of my SkyMiles account! …I need those miles. And uh uh uh, my SkyMiles account is personal, private, and confidential information …uh uh uh …stay away from my SkyMiles account, those are MY MILES.
If SLED ever got ahold of Sanford’s Delta SkyMiles account records, let’s say going back to 1995, I’m willing to bet the miles that he has clocked on that account are a WHOPPER!
People are not going to believe how frequent Sanford has been.
Frequent here, frequent there, frequent everywhere.
