Come To Jesus?
S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford is reportedly being called or visited by some of his closest advisors this morning, all of whom are privately urging him to step down in the wake of the disastrous fallout from yesterday’s revelations of additional liaisons with his Argentine lover, Maria Belen Chapur, and admissions of inappropriate physical relations with other women.
Additionally, some of Sanford’s closest friends have reportedly been advising him to step down privately from the beginning of this crisis – which began a week ago – but have been holding their tongues publicly.
That could be changing today.
Sources tell FITS that one of Sanford’s closest friends and legislative allies, Beaufort Sen. Tom Davis, traveled to Columbia this morning to meet with the governor.
Davis was not immediately available to confirm those reports.
Could this be the “come to Jesus” meeting?

He needs to see a doctor first. Why hasn’t anybody who is truly concerned advised this?
By LexingtonLady55 on July 1st, 2009 at 12:02 pm
Unfortunately I don’t think Gov. Sanford will listen to ANYONE.

He has a problem. Maybe a mental breakdown. It is really sad.
By SS Minnow on July 1st, 2009 at 12:16 pm
Yeah, maybe a shrink from Beaufort needs to come visit him.

Whether he knows it or not, Sanford stuck a knife in Davis at the first press conference. Davis will that video played in future campaigns.

this is a sad day in South Carolina. Gov. Sanford needs professional help. He is crying out for help.

He hasn’t asked me for advice yet but it is time for me to weigh in. He needs to appear on Oprah this afternoon and The View tomorrow. And do these shows with his Argentinian lover. Once the public sees these two hopelessly in love he will be able to weather this little down home political storm.

glad he’s hard at work solving the state’s problems…

If Davis didn’t knock him away from the podium during the last few agonizing minutes of the first press conference, I’m not sure he’ll snatch him now.
I am starting to see Andre in our future. Wow…

He doesn’t need help or excuses. He’s just an old fashioned naccissist – a cheater and a liar to his family and the people of this state.
What really disappoints me is that folks like the formerly upstanding Palmetto Family Council aren’t calling for his resignation. That’s hard to believe. What do they stand for besides hypocrite?
By Susan on July 1st, 2009 at 2:21 pm
He must resign or be impeached. He is not capable of being governor, husband or father. I think he wants to be forced out, so he can say he did not quit, but at the same time be free to pursue his latest relationship. Regardless, the state of SC has suffered enough. Let’s move on and support Andre.

Fiscal Conservative:
You hit the nail on the head.
There was a reform movement in SC, but Sanford converted it to a personality cult….it became the focus of so many like the Palmetto Family Concil and SC Club for Growth to go after the people that Sanford identified as HIS enemies rather than focusing on the going after those politicians who opposed reform…many times these were one and the same…but in their acquiesing to Sanford they lost sight of the cause (reform) and became blinded by their access to power.
Now, they dont know how to keep reform alive UNLESS it is with the person of Sanford….and that is why these enablers are responsible for setting back the reform movement in SC for a decade.

A therapist on another site suggested he’s looking suicidal–giving everything up…he needs help from a mental health professional now.
We need a real leader, not someone who’s working his recovery out in front of us.
For the sake of his kids and for the sake of his state and for the sake of his health, he needs to step down and go to his room.

Cubby for Governor!

Something is very amiss here. Why is he being allowed to carry on in such a manner? He obviously can’t lead his own mind anywhere, much less S.C. Someone snatch him away please and get the man some help!
By Jeffy on July 1st, 2009 at 6:27 pm
Mike…Cubby has it under control

Sanford has always been a terrible leader-the song remains the same.

I understand he may seek professional help as we all have suggested he needs. But going somewhere to get counseling and have a time out ( like the movie/singing stars do), will not help him get our trust back. Sorry, that train left the station last week. He is an embarrassment, and about to ruin what is left of out state. I was born, here, as were my ancesters, but I am ready to leave. I can not tell you how sick I think he is, and angry I am with him. He continues to flip us off every day. He MUST leave office, and now. I can not be more clear. Resign now, and stop thinking only of yourself. You are way off base, bud. I simply can not stand another minute of the narcissim, impulsive behaviors, and total disrespect for his state and the people who live here. Go back to Florida.
