Glover Wins!
It wasn’t Lucas Glover’s best round of golf, but three-over-par on the final day of the 109th U.S. Open was enough to earn the Greenville S.C. native his first major championship.
It all came down to the final hole at the fiendishly difficult Bethpage Black course in Farmingdale, N.Y., as Glover led former U.S. Amateur champ Ricky Barnes by two shots with a potential playoff looming.
The drama quickly faded, however, after Barnes narrowly missed a long birdie putt by less than an inch, meaning the former Clemson University star had only to two-putt from within five feet to claim the title.
The 29-year-old nailed his first putt to capture the title, winning by two strokes over Barnes and Phil Mickelson, whose even par round kept him in contention in the final round of a rain-soaked, unusually controversial tournament.
Tiger Woods finished at even par.
By winning the open, Glover also earned a spot in this fall’s PGA Grand Slam of Golf in Bermuda, where he will be joined by the winners of the other three major tournaments.
Glover celebrated his win by sharing a long embrace with his wife (and high school sweetheart), Jennifer.

Will – thanks for covering the U.S. Open.
Congrats to Lucas Glover. This win is great for South Carolina, South Carolina’s Junior Golf program, and Clemson University.
As a member of the Gamecock Nation, I especially want to tip my hat to Clemson University and their excellent golf tradition. In addition to Glover, several other Clemson golfers had an outstanding week at the U.S. Open.
