Greenville, S.C. native Lucas Glover is battling 2003 Masters Champion Mike Weir and former U.S. Amateur Champion Ricky Barnes for the lead as a soggy third round of the U.S. Open waits to get underway this afternoon in Farmingdale, New York.
The former Clemson University star has just one PGA win to his credit in six years on the tour, but he’s looked absolutely spectacular in two early rounds at the Bethpage State Park’s Black Course, including a record-tying 64 in yesterday’s second round.
Meanwhile, politics and golf collided at the Open as New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo threatened legal action against the USGA over its policy of not giving refunds to fans if play was canceled due to inclement weather – as it was Thursday.
Originally, the USGA said it would stick to its strict “no refund” policy, but then backed off and agreed to let fans use their Thursday tickets to attend an increasingly likely Monday round.
If no golf is played Monday, then the USGA will offer a fifty percent refund to fans who purchased the $100 tr=ickets to Thursday’s rain-soaked round.
“I commend the USGA for stepping up to the tee and doing right by their fans,” Cuomo said in a press release from his office.
Uhh … “stepping up to the tee?”
Good grief.
Anyway, props to Glover, and good luck to him the rest of the way.
