The Great National Drama Is Losing Steam

It could be because Kate Gosselin and her misplaced navel didn’t go anywhere in a bikini this week, but ratings for the TLC show “Jon and Kate Plus Eight” – which pierced the upper stratosphere three weeks ago – are now coming back down to earth.

After garnering a whopping 9.8 million viewers for its season premiere, interest in what was formerly the “Great National Drama” has tapered off considerably.

This week’s show drew “just” 2.9 million viewers, which is about where the program was before its two reality “stars” became tabloid fodder.

But is the freefall finished?

Our guess is “no,” which is probably why TLC moved quickly to milk Jon and Kate’s tabloid-filled fullness as a promotional vehicle for the network’s other shows, like “American Chopper.”

In reality (pardon the pun), we’re guessing that the reason for the show’s rapid return to its pre-Drama numbers is simple – people have grown sick and tired of Jon and Kate over the past few weeks.

Plus, the “other woman” in Jon’s life turned out to be a mall rat, and mall rats are never good for ratings.

Having said all of that, misplaced navel or not, Kate in a bikini is still just fine with us …
