The brewing spat between former GOP veep nominee Sarah Palin and late night talk show host David Letterman seemed to resolve itself today to the satisfaction of both participants – with Palin accepting a high-profile, seemingly sincere apology from Letterman, and Letterman accepting the inevitable boost in ratings that will no doubt stem from the incident.

“I would like to apologize, especially to the two daughters involved, Bristol and Willow, and also to the governor and her family and everybody else who was outraged by the joke. I’m sorry about it and I’ll try to do better in the future,” Letterman told his studio audience yesterday during the taped recording of his show.

In a statement released earlier today to FOX News, Palin accepted the apology.

“Of course it’s accepted on behalf of young women, like my daughters, who hope men who ‘joke’ about public displays of sexual exploitation of girls will soon evolve,” Palin told FOX.

“Letterman certainly has the right to ‘joke’ about whatever he wants to, and thankfully we have the right to express our reaction,” Palin continued. “This is all thanks to our U.S. Military women and men putting their lives on the line for us to secure America’s Right to Free Speech – in this case, may that right be used to promote equality and respect.”

Oh good Lord, Sarah. You gotta know when to stop … sheesh.

Anyway, in case you’ve been living with rabbit ears over the past few days, Letterman joked last week that Palin’s 18-year-old daughter was “knocked up” by New York slugger Alex “Roid”riguez at a recent Yankees game – which probably would have been funny had Palin not taken her 14-year-old daughter to the game instead.

Oops.

Let’s just say there’s a Pacific Ocean’s worth of difference when the joke’s made about a minor, and Palin made the most of that gulf over the last few days.

A little excess verbiage aside, though, it appears that Palin’s exit from this particular kerfuffle was pretty well-timed.

And yes, for obvious reasons we opted against using the expression “pull out.”

For the record, though, we continue to believe that Palin’s thin skin will hurt her in presidential politics – particularly here in South Carolina.

But then again having been on her hotness bandwagon before she was famous, we suspect our founding editor will be a drooling mess as he basically trips all over himself to endorse her candidacy.

I believe in free speach. But,I also believe in ethics.I think you should be able to say what you want. But a man of stature would not say things that step over the line then hide behind a statement of it is a joke.Letterman can say what he wants. He just makes himself look like a knee-jerk ass

Huh? What else would you have called it? The man is a COMEDIAN!!!! He tells jokes for a living! Trust me, David Letterman is not afraid to tell people how he feels about someone so when he says that a JOKE from his monologue was a JOKE, it most likely was. It was a bad one, which he tells quite a few of but this one also veered off into poor taste, especially when he allowed the perception that it was about a 14 year-old. Still, the man apologized and I don’t know what more he can do.

Dave is a long time now hard core leftist. His quickness has largely faded and he seem unnecessarily angry almost all the time; Maybe he is in a loveless marriage…maybe he can no long enjoy the drive to work…who knows.

His writers have no fear writing a sex joke about a 14 year old girl. I guess little Willow had it coming. Funny how the Harvard and Columbia writers jumped on the Palins but left the analingus mentioned in the Starr report between Clinton, the boy president #1, and that woman Misss Lewinsky out of their comedic headlines.

Backlashes are cool.
