SCGOP Activist Posts Remark Disparaging First Lady

A prominent S.C. Republican Party activist is in hot water after describing an escaped gorilla at a South Carolina zoo as an “ancestor” of First Lady Michelle Obama.

The exchange occurred after Trey Walker, an advisor to S.C. Attorney General Henry McMaster, posted an innocuous Facebook update about this morning’s escape of a Western Lowlands Gorilla from Columbia’s Riverbanks Zoo.

Walker’s harmless update, however was followed by a highly-questionable comment from longtime SCGOP activist and former State Senate candidate, Rusty DePass.

“I’m sure it’s just one of Michelle’s ancestors — probably harmless,” DePass wrote.

An early South Carolina supporter of former President George W. Bush, DePass has been active in Republican politics in South Carolina for decades.

FITS has obtained a vid cap of his remark from a Facebook friend …

comment

Obviously, we’re all for First Amendment freedoms and politically incorrect remarks around here, but this strikes even our most indelicate of sensibilities as out of bounds.

And while we will defend DePass’ right to make such a comment, it’s insanely racist – sort of like the anti-Obama flyer found on S.C. Rep. Bill Sandifer’s desk last year.

Stay tuned … we’re sure this remark will generate some significant attention and discussion, if for no other reason than the fact it’s another example of the oft-cited perils of social networking sites.

Update - The comment has been removed from Facebook. No word yet on who yanked it.

Update II – WIS-TV 10 (Columbia, S.C.) has picked up the story, as has liberal website Daily Kos.

Update IIINews Channel 7 (Spartanburg, S.C.) has republished the story, as have WLTX and WOLO, both in Columbia, SC.

Update IV - CNN is now running with the story, picking up off of WIS-TV.

Update V – This thing is big-time now, with the New York Daily News getting into the mix. And C-Net.

Update VI – Funniest thing ever … check out the “FITS Makes News” Interview with Michelle Obama in which she “responds” to the comments …

This remark should only be viewed as disparaging and racist if you are NOT a DARWINIAN. After all, according to Darwinan thought, we are all decended from apes. The potential insult here would only be that Mr. DePass is referring to a living ape as Michelle’s “ancestor”, inferring that her family has only recently joined the human family.

By Gomer on June 12th, 2009 at 1:05 pm

It is a terrible shame these racists are involved in SC politics. Let’s grow up and kick these guys out of having any power in our state-One thing you can bet on – Michelle Obama has a higher IQ than any of the goons you mention in your article.

These bozos are so backward they probably do not even believe in evolution-i can only hope these sorry ass backward SC buffoons get weeded out of the human gene pool- sooner not later.

Truly horrible. Seriously, does he have Alzheimer’s or something else, like, physiologically wrong with his head?

By Matt on June 12th, 2009 at 1:36 pm

Was just wondering if anyone has tried to contact Rusty DePass for comment. I would assume too that it is him making the comment, but there is always the possibility that someone else is using a computer that was logged in to his Facebook account. I know, remote possibility, but still.

By Mab on June 12th, 2009 at 2:01 pm

Matt — that’s the one I like to have ready:

“there is always the possibility that someone else is using a computer that was logged in”

There is ALWAYS that.

By Col. Richard Mustard on June 12th, 2009 at 2:09 pm

“…but this even strikes our most indelicate of sensibilities as out of bounds.”

Yeah, it does because you know it’s disparaging to the man and makes for good “news”, more hits. Who gives a damn what some wrinkled, old SOB posted on facebook? If you really believe in what you write about free speech, then you wouldn’t draw attention to his comments. But seeing as how you could post this and attach Henry’s name to it probably makes it worth your while.

By Todd on June 12th, 2009 at 2:10 pm

Rusty, Rusty, Rusty. You are smarter than that. It makes the entire state look bad when any prominent person would make such an impulsive comment trying to get a quick laugh. Say you’re sorry and move on.

By evolutionist2 on June 12th, 2009 at 2:24 pm

Actually, it’s an insult even if you ARE a DARWINIAN. And the last sentence of evolutionist09’s post explains why. To call the insult a “potential” one is to ingnore the fact you’ve just stated. The remark IS insulting and suggests that the Obamas are sub-human, which would make Rusty DePass sub-sub-human.

By Bluetrooperone on June 12th, 2009 at 2:54 pm

A simple DNA test should be able to clear up all of this.

By Freddie Guy on June 12th, 2009 at 3:19 pm

That is very Lee Atwater-ish of you to connect the racist DePass comment to Trey Walker to Henry McMaster to Republicans.

So three degrees of separation exists between McMaster and an obvious and blatant racist. And all Repubs are four degrees from hangin’ this Obama guy.

Kudos.

Also enjoyed the Welcome Center post! Playin’ the race card today are we?

One of the FITS lackey’s must have watched “Boogie Man” or read “Bad Boy” to Will last night?

Actually Wes Wolfe’s take on the gorilla story was pretty racist too:

“Mike the Gorilla previously did a stint at the Philadelphia Zoo, where he was schooled by the more experienced apes in the rough-and-tumble Philly scene.”

Clearly, the implication is to compare the rampaging gorilla with the unfortunately large number of African-Americans incarcerated in America’s burgeoning penal system. It is an axiom of prison life, that inmates learn additional criminal skills while incarcerated.

This kind of bigoted clap-trap should have no place in our society.

No big surprise. Rusty DeAss represents that generation of Republicans who are Republicans mainly because of race.

By Jeremy on June 12th, 2009 at 6:20 pm

@ evolutionist09

No, there is no doubt in my mind that it was totally meant to be disparaging.
Even if one believes in evolution, the prevailing theories don’t claim that the current great apes are our “ancestors”, but that they would be more akin to “cousins”, also evolved from a common ancestor somewhere back down the family tree.
Please actually read some Darwin and some evolutionary theory.

By Jeremy on June 12th, 2009 at 6:29 pm

@ Col. Mustard and Freddie

I don’t get your beefs. DePass SAID IT! And he said it on Walker’s Facebook. That makes it legit to bring them both up. The only mention of Henry McMaster is the statement of fact (no made up BS, but the undeniable fact) that Walker works for McMaster.
It’s no different than stating “Microsoft CEO” or “Intel head of PR” or “Ford COO” or “White House Chief of Staff” or any other job title.

Get your panties out of a wad and quit your nit-picking on that stuff. I know the strategy, but you can’t take the spotlight off of a GLARINGLY racist statement from an individual who is UNDENIABLY involved with the GOP as a political activist.

Your whitewashing won’t work.

By R on June 12th, 2009 at 8:04 pm

The race issue aside, how the hell could a currently living ape have been someone’s ancestor?

By Calhoun Fawls on June 13th, 2009 at 1:54 am

Walker can not control was was initially said on his facebook page. Apparently, he removed it. I am not a McMaster supporter, but pulling the AG into this is really a stretch.

As for facebook, I got fb friends I went to high school with and have not talked to in ten years. If they put some stupid remark up, I would not know it until I logged in at looked at my page. Pulling the comment down is all you can do.

Besides, I find it more interesting that for the third time this week Sic’s website has done a better job attacking from the Left than the Left in SC does. Wes, there’s your angle. Just give credit to ole Calhoun.

Rusty DePass’s comment is disgraceful, and of course, it will be picked up by the national media. Again, South Carolina will be seen as a state of backward, mindless racists. It is so disheartening. This state and its people are better than this, and it is long past time for us to stand up and repudiate such behavior and rhetoric. He has a right to say it, and we have a right to condemn him for it.

By Ruby Motz on June 13th, 2009 at 9:44 am

I believe in the Six Degrees of Shell Suber philosophy. All bad things in the SC Republican world are directly affected or caused by Shell Suber at a maximum of Six Degrees. This one happened to be only two degrees.

Think about it. I bet you can think of examples as well.

A little girl wrote to Sarah Palin and asked;

‘How did the human race start?’

Sarah Palin answered, ‘God made Adam and Eve, they had children, and so was all mankind made.’

Two days later the girl wrote to Michelle Obama and asked the same question.

Michelle Obama answered,

‘Many years ago there were monkeys from which the human race evolved.’

The confused girl went to her father and said,

‘Dad, how is it possible that Sarah Palin told me the Human race was created by God,
and Michelle Obama said they evolved from monkeys.’

The father answered, ‘Well, Dear, it is very simple, Sarah Palin told you about her ancestors and Michelle Obama told you about hers.’

I am not surprised that another Republican got caught saying something so wrong. With leaders of that party like Rush, and Fox News, they say whatever nasty thing that comes to mind. The problem is seen when innocent people take these remarks to heart and kill people, or say stupid but hurtful things. The Repub. party needs to re-group and start being more repectful of others. But what a stupid, crude, hurtful thing to say. Why did he think it would be O.K. to say that to Trey?

@ evolutionist09

I am what you refer to as a “Darwinian” (as you clearly are not, because you blithely repeated a common, completely wrong interpretation of human evolutionary theory that no “Darwinian” would actually say and is only repeated by the subset of creationists who are too stupid to actually understand the theory they are fighting) and I consider the comment racist.

Regardless of whether one accepts the theory that human beings evolved (not descended, they are two different things, but don’t worry: nobody expects a creationist to be able to make this distinction, any more than we would expect a chimpanzee to be able to) from a common ancestor of apes (not from apes, and we would expect even a creationist to be able to understand this distinction, because it really requires so very little of the ability for rational thinking that supposedly sets humans apart from apes), the comment was not in any way made to illustrate that theory but was clearly made with a racist intent.

By Duane Phinney on June 13th, 2009 at 4:27 pm

Only women and their family’s that belong to the GOP can be trashed, what’s wrong with these people?

By S.o.G. on June 13th, 2009 at 4:32 pm

@John Darwin:

Actually if someone wrote to Michelle Obama asking about the origin of the human species, I feel confident she would reply with a cogent & correct explanation of human evolutionary theory, not the completely incorrect one on which your little joke relies.

This is because every interview I’ve seen or biography that I’ve read indicates that she is both highly intelligent and extraordinarily well educated and therefore unlikely to be prone to the inability to understand the basic premises of evolutionary theory that you demonstrate.

I’m sure however that if you managed to train a chimpanzee to speak & read at a grade 7 level that it WOULD be prone to the same misunderstandings you demonstrate, which both intrigues & amuses me.

This comment is typical of one wing of the Republican party. I hope this senator, Rush Limbaugh, Gingrich, Cheney and all the other right wing extremists keep it up…I firmly believe it explains why the percent of Republicans is dropping while Democrats are gaining. I doubt if DePass believes in evolution. That makes his remark not only unkind, but also unpatriotic. I wonder how he would feel if someone ade this comment about his wife, mother or daughter.
This is much more insulting than the inappropriate comment by Letterman about Palin’s daughter.

By susan on June 13th, 2009 at 7:24 pm

Well, maybe Rusty can go on Letterman….You know this story will make the mainstream newspapers not like the insults to Sarah Palins’s daughters. I knew someone would drag Rush into this. My God he gets blamed for everything!!!! When I finished doing my laundry and took socks out of the dryer, I had less socks than when I started out. I said to myself I don’t know where these socks went but I am sure Limbaugh is behind it. Dumb remark yeah. Dumb to write on facebook yeah. Not as bad as Jeramiah Wright. And I don’t think Fox News was behind the shooting at the museum. What ever happen to there just be some NUTS out there. Not all dumb things said nor people shot has to be tied to politics.

I hope everyone now accepts the REAL reason for the hatred of President Obama by some Republicans.
Make all the excuses you can, silly comments about he is correct because of Darwin etc., but Depass talks like an old style KKK racist and is a prominent member of the Republican party.
This is why I left the Republican party with the last election, I am not a racist and will not be a member of a party that embraces racists.
Worst of all, no Southern gentleman attacks another man’s wife because he does not like her husband, where I come from that is sign of a true coward.

Old & Racist Rusty,

He’s a racist a__ __ hole; and he needs to do more than apologize to the 1st Lady. She doesn’t deserve that type of comment; and he had no right to try to turn it around on the 1st Lady stating that she recently brought it up to the media that we’re all descendants of apes. She never made such a statement. It shows you that Rusty is from that type of generation who is quite jealous that Michelle Obama is the most beautiful 1st Lady this county has ever had; and he can’t stand it.

Evolutionist 09 wrote some inaccurate, and typical, comment about human beings evolving from apes. Only right-wing believers in creationist nonsense labor under this profound delusion. No scientist, no evolutionist or biologist has ever made that assertion. Humans and apes have a common ancestor, millions of years ago. So the comment was fairly simply and casually racist, of an order of magnitude greater than anything you ever experience in the Yankee North. The South has a lot of great people; I know, I hitchhiked through their years ago and met some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. But there are some of the nastiest, ignorant and retrograde genetic accidents there as well. I’ve had guns pulled on me down South, mainly because I was from MN,(you know, the North, and particularly the First Minnesota Volunteers), and have heard the most casually savage and horrible denigrations of anyone not a white Southerner. It’s something, like the many excesses of various and sundry Christian sects, that has to be addressed by the offending parties themselves. Mr. DePass should be forced to resign, his statement is beyond the pale.

By mountainaires on June 14th, 2009 at 5:03 pm

It’s not RACISM, it’s HATE-SPEECH. Against women.

David Letterman can call the Governor of Alaska “slutty” and insinuate that her daughter is a prostitute, and could get pregnant by A-Rod during the 7th inning stretch. And, no, it is NOT okay for Letterman to make these assertions about a 14-year-old girl, or an 18-year-old new mother! It’s HATE-SPEECH.

We must stop it now. It’s not a left-right partisan divide; it’s not “racism”; it’s degrading, demeaning, discrimination in the form of HATE-SPEECH against women–white and black, young and old. “Nappy headed Hos” is no different than “slutty,” folks.

And, it should stop right now. I was offended by Letterman’s comments and I’m offended by these comments about Michelle Obama. And, until men and women of integrity and intelligence start to loudly complain about it to the FCC and to the Networks, it will get worse.

By bamabelle on June 14th, 2009 at 9:12 pm

Coming from a state with a similar background, I’d have to say most of the comments on here from your state have been against what the old fart said which is good because that means what he said is not accepted by most of us. This is why the GOP didn’t win last year and probably won’t be winning anytime soon because they keep catering to the same misfits who are either dying out or died long time ago.

When I read comments like the one from “evolutionist.” I wonder how these fu**nozzles ever made it past high school. Here’s a tip, boys – if you never studied a subject and the only thing you know about it is what you heard from Rush Limbaugh, it’s best to keep your mouth shut about it. Otherwise, you’re likely to reveal your stupidity in public – and that’s always an ugly sight.

You gotta admit though, she DOES look like a gorilla…

The GOP continues to shoot themselves in the foot. Just how many black Americans do you think will be attracted to such a party?

By Miss T on June 15th, 2009 at 10:31 am

Where is it? And what happened to Lance Mannions’ post?

the most amazing part is his half-assed apology. “sorry you misunderstood.” so, you’re saying we made a mistake, notyou? most racists believe they’re not racists. they really believe it’s funny to compare black people to apes. this guy is a douche.

By Roshan on June 15th, 2009 at 12:58 pm

C’mon. Don’t be such hyper-liberals defending anything and everything. You guys remind me of flaming feminists. Remember how annoying they are?! Where is the sense of humour.

BTW: Thanks “mountainaires”. I knew there was something going on between Palin and Letterman, but thanks to you for publicizing the details so that the few who didn’t know them know now. How are you and Rusty any different!

By Rick on June 15th, 2009 at 2:34 pm

Ya ever notice that someone on the right can say something and it’s automatically wrong and the individual is up for a verbal hanging, but, if its something the left says, well, its just a slip of the tongue. Yep love the even handedness…. Say Michele and everyone ASSUMES its Obummer, Say Palin and everybody agrees it ok to rape a 14 year old….yep class act ya’ll.

“. . . while we will defend DePass’ right to make such a comment, it’s insanely racist”

Tasteless? Yes. Racist? No.

Regardless of Michelle’s race and skin color, she does have an odd, animalistic, shaped face. I think it has something to do with her jaw-line. Some call it a horse face or a dog face while others, like DePass, seem to think her face resembles a gorilla. In any case, I can identify with DePass’s description of Michelle and his humor as related to her dog face. It has nothing to do race and everything to do with face.

NOW WE SEE WHY THE EDUCATION SYSTEM IN SC IS THE WAY IT IS. YOU HAVE PECKER WOODS IN PLACES WHERE THEY SHOULDN’T BE ( POSITIONS OF AUTHORITY ) THANK GOD THE SOUTH LOST THE WAR.

Michelle Shaniqua Obama looks more like a Sasquatch in a dress. She lacks grace, style, and good breeding. Her ghetto flair appeals to the lowest common denominator.

Michelle Shaniqua

Her middle name is not Shaniqua (which you already knew since you guys are obsessed with the Obamas). Spoken like true S.C. trailer park trash.

By Sistarella on June 17th, 2009 at 11:32 pm

Dianne72,

Did you attend school? Let me guess you are unhappy with yourself and your baby daddy that beats you and takes your money to spend on drugs. That’s sad you can even spell and you surely do not know what a ghetto is. lol!

You are just atmosphere, so you should not be heard…

I’m speechless. The racism (intentional or not) is pretty awful, but the lack of any judgement or common sense is simply stupefying. Perhaps we should rename Facebook Face-the-music-book just to give senseless wonders like Rusty a heads-up before they lose their heads.

Thanks for the posting — you’ve done great work by preserving the page from Facebook.

From the comments it is soooooo obvious the level of racism which exists with right wingers. The four cornerstones of republican thought: racism, greed, self-centerness and elitism, all of them demonstrated by your hateful, sinful statements. Also, for you simple minded, learn something about Darwinism before embarrassing yourselves. Apes and man descended from a common ancestor, not one from the other. Education is a wonderful thing, you should try it.
