RINO Really, Really Likes The Status Quo

One of South Carolina’s most conservative districts appears poised to elect its second straight big government RINO, at least if the “positions” held by wanna-be Representative Roger Costner are any indication.

After all, Costner – who is running for the seat of RINO Rep. Carl Gullick – has only one “position” listed on his website, and that’s his opposition to parental choice.

“My position on choice is settled,” Costner writes. “I will never support a school choice bill that takes away any money from school districts in district 48!

And yes, the repetitive diction, bold font, italics and exclamation point are all taken from Costner’s original prose.

So … now that we know what Costner is against, what is he for?

“Lets find a way to spread the parental involvement and best practices of our schools with the rest of the state,” he writes, obviously ignoring the fact that choice is the ultimate facilitator of parental involvement.

“When we accomplish this, the issue of school choice will disappear for most parents,” he continues. “We must correct the reason(s) parents want to take children out of public education.”

That’s funny, because sources in York County tell FITS that Costner is yet another one of their local “leaders” who likes to slam choice for other parents while quietly taking advantage of it himself.

Specifically, we’re told that Costner bought property in one part of York County to ensure that his kids didn’t have to attend the less-than-stellar public school that they were originally zoned for.

Tsk-tsk … last time we checked, that wasn’t a good way to get elected.

So, do we have anything nice to say about this RINO-in-the-making?

Well, his wife’s got great hair …

Voters in York County (literally) cannot afford to elect another Bobby Harrell “fluffer” to the State House. Let’s hope someone else files to run for this seat … and soon.

Nobody will every win supporting school choice in that district. You have to tell Larry Marchant that if he is going to keep paying you, he has to send better info.

Yes, it’s a district with great public schools and tons of upper-middle to upper-income Republicans. People who don’t have to send their kids to private school to get a good education. One of the major reasons the real parental choice movement has hit so many road-blocks in this state is that supporters don’t do a good job of telling these types of parents that it does not “take money out of the public schools” or “result in less money for the public schools” in the way that the public education establishment rather effectively suggests.

This would be a great test-case for a real Sanford Republican, vouchers and all, to run. Tell these Republican parents that vouchers and tax credits do not result in less money for their public schools. Challenge opponents like Costner on that. Explain to those public school teachers that their schools will not suffer by a little dose of parental empowerment. Appeal to the parents’ love of capitalism and competition in their professional work lives and explain how these concepts could be used as drivers to force the public schools to improve in the worst parts of the state. I’m not a true believer enough to think this would result in an easy win, but I’d love to see someone try to run unafraid on this issue for once and explain it in more persuasive ways.

Nice to see that John Vierdsen realized his wolf cub blog has zero readership. At least he was smart enough to figure out the best way to get people to read his thoughts is to post them here.

School choice is fundamentally about free-markets and individual choice. Last time I checked those were essentials to carry the authentic conservative banner.
