sheep-cliff

Battered by a bad economy and a state government hellbent on spending every last dime of taxpayer money it can get its grubby paws on, it should come as no surprise that South Carolina’s economy is “reeling from the feeling.”

At least that’s what May tax collection data is telling us, as individual income, corporate and sales taxes are all limping along

Here’s the bleak report from S.C. Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom’s office:

“Individual income tax receipts showed the largest declines. They were 48.4% ($175 million) lower for May 2009 than for May 2008. This followed a 38.9% ($129 million) decline for April 2009 over April 2008. On a fiscal year-to-date basis (July through May), individual income tax receipts are 16.1% ($476 million) below the prior year.

“Corporate income tax receipts were down 40.7% for May, following a decline of 35.4% for April, resulting in a year-to-date decline of 17.3 % ($44 million).

Sales and use tax collections fell 15.7% ($33 million) last month and 8.7% ($177 million) so far this year.

“Revenues from all sources fell 35.5% ($226 million) in May following declines of 24.5% ($149 million) in April. Through May 2009, total revenues have plunged 12.8% ($756 million) for the year.

Nice.

With record unemployment, declining tourism revenues, the Southeast’s highest marginal income tax rate and a legislative branch that can’t restrain itself from growing government even in the worst economic environment on record, the fact that South Carolina’s tax revenues are in the crapper shouldn’t come as a surprise to anybody.

“This extraordinary situation forcefully underscores the need for spending caps, lower debt, and higher reserves to better cushion us during times like these,” Eckstrom said.

“bleak” and “Eckstrom”. Those terms belong together. Has he taken anymore vacations on the taxpayer’s dime?

why is is that fitsnews never mentions that SC TAXPAYERS ARE ON THE HOOK FOR THE STIMULUS MONEY WHETHER WE HAD TAKEN IT OR NOT??? it seems like a convenient little detail to omit when trashing the sensible minds that just didn’t want to see that money go to other states while we get the bill. if i’m wrong about that, i’d love to hear why.

CNSYD…your tone is exactly what is wrong with this state. Columbia’s frat-house tradition of mindlessly praising friends and bashing enemies is why this state continues to fail at damn near everything.

If we worried more about discussing the message as opposed to the messenger the majority of our smart and educated children wouldn’t flee to Atlanta or Charlotte the second they able to do so. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results. Welcome to SC.

These revenue numbers show that sales tax revenue is more reliable. The only way to overcome inertia and get businesses to hire is to dramatically reduce or eliminate the state income tax. Status quo policies will not put people back to work and get the economy going.

Please join me at the Orangeburg Tea Party this Sunday (Jun. 14) at 3 pm at the Orangeburg Fairgrounds, 350 Magnolia Rd. We need to get the attention of elected officials in Columbia and Washington who are leading us over the cliff!

Well when you put people out of work, don’t try to replace jobs, this is exactly what you get.
So when Mark runs for President, the news networks should assess the state of the state of South Carolina. Boy no votes from that adventure ey?

Fashizzle, apparently you ain’t checked out the real estate market in ATL. They are having distress sales. To top that off there is no traffic problem either, right? So who is flocking there? Now Charlotte. Wonder why it is that folk who work in Charlotte prefer to live in SC and commute? Charlotte, home of the big bank failures. So to understand your point, a message from a charlatan is just as reliable as one from a truth sayer. Is that right?
