Gov. Mark Sanford will not contest an upcoming S.C. Supreme Court decision on $700 million in disputed federal “stimulus” funds, meaning that a bitter, months-long political battle is likely to come to an end as soon as this week.

“We respect it and we’re going to abide by it,” Sanford said of the forthcoming verdict by the State Court, which is widely expected to go against him.

Sanford had fought to have the debate over these funds – which represent less than a tenth of the “stimulus” money South Carolina is slated to receive – decided in federal court.

Earlier today, however, U.S. District Court Judge Joseph Anderson ruled against the governor, saying that the two main “stimulus” lawsuits against Sanford should be decided by the state court instead.

A third case, filed by Sanford, will be decided by Anderson after the S.C. Supreme Court rules.

S.C. Chief Justice Jean Toal has already hinted that her court would rule in favor of the S.C. General Assembly – which appoints her and all of her fellow Justices. Toal is also a former member of the legislature.

Such a ruling by the court would put South Carolina in the curious position of having its chief executive stripped of power that was explicitly bestowed upon him by federal law – which amounts to a further weakening of what is already one of the nation’s most Constitutionally-limited governorships.

Sanford said such a ruling should be a “wake-up call” to South Carolinians as to the arcane nature of their state government.

In fact, prior to the Supreme Court signaling its support for legislators appropriating the funds, most lawmakers had previously acknowledged that Sanford was the only person authorized to apply for the money.

You need a lesson in SC Constitutional law FITS. Not saying it’s right, but it gives great weight to the General Assembly in terms of power, however, Governors as far back as I can remember have been able to accomplish a great deal of their agenda with the same, if not less power, than the current Governor. It speaks to leadership skills….of which our current governor and staff sorely lack.

Not in favor of the Governor or the General Assembly, but I think it has everything to do with the personality of the Governor, not being a people person, and the General Assembly Leadership which only looks out for itself. They don’t even care about their own party members. I feel it is a great time to wipe the Governor and the leadership of the House and Senate from office. None of them are doing South Carolinians any benefit!!!

gub’ner sanfraud holds a chart showing the clear decline in economic development and employment in S.C. under his administration

sic(k) willie wrote “Gov. Mark Sanford will not contest an upcoming S.C. Supreme Court decision…” Which means he knows he’s toast.

sic(k) one and gub’ner sanfraud have known from the start.

This was all about sanfraud’s grandstanding.

While S.C. children, schools and teachers suffer.

Looking forward to the bumper stickers: “Palin/Sanfraud”

And underneath: “Republi-tarians for Amerika”

BIN,

Which children have suffered? The ones who don’t play golf on the state run courses? The ones who can’t make it down to see the Hunley Museum? the ones who can’t attend slush-fund recipient causes like the Green Bean Museum, Okra Strut, etc.?

All the money required to do what the state SHOULD do is available and more. The fact that the Legislature wastes millions of dollars on pet projects, patronage, and pork is not lost on those of us who keep an eye on things. It’s the easily duped who keep the status quo intact.

Sanford is doing what apparently is the Republican trend now….giving up and not fighting for anything. Whats eff’d up is that this giving up trend is being done by some of the best in the Republican party.Oh well…bye Republicans, make way for a third party.
