Sanford’s Ad Gets Rave Reviews?
Last month, S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford hit the airwaves with a TV ad outlining his position on the small portion of federal “stimulus” dollars that he is currently attempting to exercise his control over.
In a move that surprised some people, we panned both the governor’s ad and the policy behind it.
Frankly, we think Sanford should have refused to certify any of these bureaucratic bailout funds. On top of that, his desire to see this money used for debt repayment (yawn) misses an important opportunity in our book to frame this debate around two much more important (and defensible) fiscal issues – tax cuts and spending caps.
Anyway, we’ve made it clear that we differ from Sanford’s position on these funds.
Also, we’ve also made it clear that we thought his commercial sucked.
“Sanford is flat and uninspiring,” we wrote at the time. “He looks tired … old even. His hand gestures are staged and stuffy – much like the ad’s elitist backdrop. Even the commercial’s ‘money line,’ when Sanford says ‘the easy thing isn’t always the right thing’ – comes off as canned and contrived.”
Obviously, we stand by our assessment.
Amazingly, though, this “canned and contrived” commercial has now been lauded and honored – heralded even – as the greatest thing since sliced bread by one of the foremost authorities on such things.
GOP pollster Frank Luntz, whose focus group dials have become the stuff of political legend, said this morning that Sanford’s ad was one of the most successful he has ever analyzed.
“We’ve not tested an ad that does that well,” Luntz said this morning on FOX News.
Here’s the video of the interview …
Not finished, Luntz goes on to say that “Governor Sanford is the most articulate Republican out there right now, and the other Republicans ought to pay attention – or if they don’t, their numbers will continue to languish.”
Pretty heady praise, indeed …

If Sanford is the most articulate Republician, then you can stick a fork in the GOP because they are done.

Awesome…Now how do we get rid of the likes of Flimsy Graham?
By FWFIV on May 29th, 2009 at 1:15 pm
The most articulate? This about a guy who had thirty seconds of dead air on national television when he could not answer a question.
What a joke!!!

Rest assured that your assessment was correct.

True, as I said at the time, even bad Sanford TV beats 90 percent of the pols out there. It still did manage to kick the pro stimulus ad’s butt as well.

Liberty-
As for a specific name, I do not have one. But, it is not too much to ask for a leader who can get things done and work well with others. Sanford’s arrogant demeanor has resulted in zero accompishments during his term so far.

How much did Sanfraud pay this guy?
By craig on May 30th, 2009 at 10:18 am
Liberty, what FWFIV means is, we need a Gov who will get along and go along with the same morons who have been holding SC back for years.
By CNSYD on May 30th, 2009 at 10:27 am
Liberty, I too do not have a name. Party is unimportant to me. I knew Sanford was a phony when he was in Congress. So his move to Columbia is not when I found him out. I already knew it. I tried to tell all the upstate people they would regret voting for him but they were wearing their GOP blinders.

Liberty, you finally got something right. Ron Paul is a moron. His Presidential campaign was so well received. For Governor name I can only give you past Governors such as Hollings, West, Riley, Edwards. Wilkins may be a possibility.

Hollings…the first one off the bat.HMMM didnt he support Jesse Jackson for Pres.?? Wow you are a Tard…I want to go the way of Ron Paul and freedom and you want Hollings and Jesse Jackson politics.I think people can totally see how much weight your comments carry now….JEEEEZ

Gov. Mike Huckabee tops my list of articulate Republicans. Gov. Sanford rates highly for sticking to principles. Will is right – the push needs to be on government reduction (which none of us would miss – just fewer cubicles in government offices) and tax reduction. If we don’t allow small businesses to keep more of their revenue and workers to keep more of their wages, we will see unemployment rates at Great Depression levels.
Is anyone paying attention?
