The Specter Caucus?

In our scathing rebuke of S.C. Senate “Majority” Leader Harvey Peeler the other day, we neglected to point out that freshman Sen. Lee Bright wasn’t the only one who took a piece out of “Harvaldo’s hindquarters.”

In fact, Gov. Mark Sanford’s spokesman Joel Sawyer fired off an equally impressive zinger at Peeler in the story.

Here’s the exchange …

“Half of the caucus loves Mark Sanford and half does not,” Peeler said. “I’m going to stop short of saying the governor is a toxic asset to the Republican Party, but for somebody to be so skinny, he sure is a heavy load to carry.”

Sanford spokesman Joel Sawyer said the Republican senators who vote with the Democrats are the real “toxic asset.”

“There are so-called Republicans in our state Senate who could make Arlen Specter blush,” Sawyer said.

Nice …

Specter Caucus T-shirts, anybody?

Unlike our founding editor, who relished his pit bull reputation back when he served in the governor’s office, the perception is that Sawyer has always been a bit more reserved in his comments.

Or smarter, anyway.

Yet while he hasn’t called anybody the “Mayor of Importantville” or tossed out an “electric rate McCarthyism” accusation, Sawyer knows how to use his jab.

We know this better than most … because he’s literally “gone a few rounds” with our founding editor.

A controversial “split-decision,” if we recall – with a lot of donkey-punching on the part of the current spokesman and a crowd-pleasing uppercut from the former.
