Canes Look To Stay Alive
The Carolina Hurricanes are looking to avoid being swept tonight by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Eastern Conference Finals of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
To survive, they’ll need a big performance from C Eric Staal, who has been held without a goal in the series after scoring 40 during the regular season.
Meanwhile, the Penguins and star C Sidney Crosby are looking to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals for the second time in a row.
Over in the Western Conference, Sic Willie’s beloved Chicago Blackhawks are also facing elimination – down 3 games to 1 to the defending Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings.
If Detroit and Pittsburgh advance, it will set up a rematch of last year’s Finals, which the Wings won 4 games to 2.
Only two NHL teams have ever rebounded from a 0-3 deficit, the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs (in the Stanley Cup Finals) and the 1975 New York Islanders (Stanley Cup Quarterfinals).
Interestingly enough, the Boston Red Sox remain the only other team in any professional sport to come back from an 0-3 hole – taking four in a row from the New York Yankees in LCS play in 2004.
