MSM Hangs Bright Out To Dry On Abortion Bill

In one of the most pathetic excuses for “journalism” we’ve ever seen, South Carolina’s most liberal newspaper actually blamed a pro-life Senator for sinking the legislative session’s main pro-life bill.

No really … they did.

Earlier today, La Socialista (a.k.a. The State newspaper) posted the following item on its legislative blog:

The abortion issue is dead in the 2009 General Assembly, its death blow coming at the hands of the state senator who days ago told the Senate that issue is the only reason he is an elected official.

Sen. Lee Bright, R-Spartanburg, again threw the Senate in a lurch Thursday, when he asked for the Senate’s consent to leave the day’s main business – dispatching of Gov. Mark Sanford’s vetoes – to resume consideration of a House-passed bill that requires a woman to wait 24 hours after an ultrasound is performed before proceeding with an abortion.

Wait, wait, wait …

So let’s get this straight – a State Senator tried to force an on-the-record vote for a bill that he cares passionately about, a bill that was already dead – and he’s somehow going to be held responsible for it dying?

Because seriously, “death blow coming at the hands of …” sounds pretty accusatory to us.

Let’s recap what actually happened, shall we?

Last week, “Republican” Sen. Larry Martin unilaterally decided to cut a deal with Democrats that effectively killed the 24-hour ultrasound bill for the year – along with several other pieces of legislation.

An effort was made at the time to get the bill on the calendar for the final week of debate but it failed, with Senate President Glenn McConnell casting one of two decisive votes to kill it.

Or so he thought.

Today, Bright saw an opening to try and get this bill back up for debate and took it … giving Republicans one final chance to vote up-or-down on the legislation.

After Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer permitted the vote, though, seven Republicans – or precisely the number needed – voted to “carry over” (i.e. kill) the legislation.

Who were they?

Glad you asked … (you can even click on those pages and e-mail them, if you want) …

Sen. Thomas Alexander
Sen. Ray Cleary
Sen. Ronnie Cromer
Sen. Jake Knotts
Sen. Hugh Leatherman
Sen. Larry Martin
Sen. Glenn McConnell

So contrary to the left-wing drivel being spouted by La Socialista, the “death blow” for the 24-hour ultrasound bill did not “come at the hands of” Sen. Lee Bright.

It came at the hands of these seven “Republicans.”

For better or worse, that’s where the real culpability lies.

As regular readers of FITS know, we don’t get jazzed up like this on social issues very often, but we’re not about to sit by and let a guy who was simply pushing for something be believed in get unfairly blamed by a lazy, agenda-driven MSM.

Got a problem with the 24-hour ultrasound bill not passing? Call one of those seven Senators who actually killed it, not Lee Bright …

I’m glad the bill failed. The legislature should worry less about a woman’s right and fix the damn budget/loss of jobs! Which is more of a mess? Something one woman pays for – legally or everyone having to pay for these mofos mistakes at the Statehouse? Priorities PEOPLE!

Bring on the t-shirts and bumperstickers “I survived Lee Bright’s one term in the Senate”. Hope Scott Talley didn’t close his Senate campaign account!

You care more about an unborn child than a woman’s rights (typical man), legislator’s and their wasteful spending habits, higher taxes, loss of jobs, etc. Get over DUDE! Even the Catholics are coming around! Let’s find a common ground! But in the meantime, don’t waste my tax dollars on legislators looking forward to a gathering at the governor’s manison like the other night!

Lee Bright is my state senator, and he is doing a great job. Anyone who suggests otherwise forgets that all he is doing is representing the views of the majority of us living on the westside of Spartanburg.

If you voted for Bright because of this stupid position, that’s pathetic. And he’s not doing a great job if represents this point of view. It’s actually counterintuitive to conservative values to try to regulate what people do with their body. Or did you miss that in civics class? Oh, I get it: You’re like the rest of the right wingers up there on the “westside of Spartanburg” who say you shouldn’t regulate anything except morality. Please. This state has bigger problems.

We are here to agree with newzjunkie.A woman has the right to kill her children.Just because people make children is no reason they should be able to live.Stand togethor comrades. As long as there is good reason, kill your children. We have a bigger agenda to worry about.Long live the commissar
