Family Feud

blackhawks

Its 1-0 … and we’re not just talking about the Red Wings’ early Western Conference Finals lead over the Chicago Blackhawks in the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs.

The Detroit-Chicago series is also a family feud between ex-Detroiter Mrs. Sic Willie and our founding editor, who is a longtime Blackhawks fan.

Needless to say, Sic has been talking plenty of trash about how his beloved Hawks were going to “mop the ice” with the defending champion Red Wings.

In other words, it’s not unlike his irrational “Brady bashing” of the New England Patriots – except perhaps even less effective.

After all, Detroit mopped the ice with Chicago 5-2 yesterday – giving Mrs. Sic a 1-0 lead in the “family feud.”

Don’t watch ice hockey? You’re missing out – and yet here in the South you’re not alone.

In fact, Sic covered the sport’s tough road in “these here parts” a few years back in one of our first-ever FITS posts.

Frankly, hockey’s Southern hangover is surprising considering the fact that the Carolina Hurricanes captured Lord Stanley’s mug in 2006 – and are playing in the Eastern Conference finals opposite the Pittsburgh Penguins this year.

Who knows, maybe former S.C. Speaker (and U.S. Ambassador to Canada) David Wilkins could be a “hockey ambassador” to our state or something.

Anyway, tonight’s Hurricanes-Penguins game faces off on Versus at 7:30 p.m.

Check NHL.com for local listings.

Oh, and props to our blog rivals over at Palmetto Scoop for covering the Hurricanes’ dramatic overtime win last week over the Boston Bruins in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
