Nikki’s In
S.C. State Representative Nikki Haley will seek the GOP nomination for governor in 2010, according to an announcement made today on her campaign website.
Haley’s announcement – which had been speculated on for months in Palmetto political circles – shakes up a race that many had viewed as a battle between three establishment candidates, U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett, Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer and Attorney General Henry McMaster.
A reformer with one of the General Assembly’s most conservative voting records, Haley automatically becomes the odds-on favorite to receive the endorsement of Gov. Mark Sanford, who remains hugely popular among the electorate at large and especially with Republican primary voters.

Great news. She is the only one out of a field of six so far that can potentially stand out as something other than your typical cookie-cutter candidate. She would not be running if she did not think she could at least make it into a runoff. If she does this right she has the potential to unite GOP voters from both the Sanford wing and the more establishment wing, plus a ton of GOP and independent women voters. 2010 just got interesting!

It is a no loss all to gain campaign for Nikki, and while her
challenges will be many and some unique, if Sanford steps up she may
just be competitive.

People said the same thing about Louisiana and Bobby Jindal…an Indian-American could not win in that deep South state…by the end of the campaign there were bumper stickers that said “Bubba’s for Bobby”. In an race between Nikki Haley and Mullins McLeod, I’d rather be the Indian-American woman than the liberal trial lawyer any day in SC.

She’s stuck her neck out for basic reforms that the corrupt, quid pro quo establishment despises. We know her by her works. The rest of the field is a bunch of establishment hack RINOs for the most part. None of them has proven himself like she has.

My point exactly. How would we know that from her bio she has on the legislative site. Again, like or not it will be an issue, she had better make clear her affiliation. It WILL matter in this state, and the closer to the piedmont you get, the more it will matter. Having said that, I hope she scares the bageebas out of the legislature with the prosect of a Sanford clone for the next 4-8 years.

I’ll be supporting Nikki but for the record….In Louisiana, Bobby lost his first gubernatorial bid to a Blanco. In large part do to the fact that numerous white independents and Republicans would not vote for an Indian American. It was only after Blanco’s handling of Katrina that allowed those voters to reconsider the prejudices.
