Nikki Haley has yet to announce her candidacy for governor – or even state definitively that she’s running – but the third-term Republican from Lexington was the top vote-getter in a recent online poll conducted here on FITS.

Obviously, our little survey wasn’t intended to be an accurate reflection of where the race stands, just a little fun for political insiders.

Of course, our poll (which included nearly 350 “voters”) did receive twice the feedback of a popular Greenville, S.C. radio station’s survey – which we’re pretty sure entitles us to some free Steak-n-Shake.

Anyway, Haley registered 20% in our survey, and was followed by Furman professor Brent Nelsen (19%), Congressman Gresham Barrett (19%), Attorney General Henry McMaster (16%), Sen. Tom Davis (11%), Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer (6%), Sen. Larry Grooms (6%) and Sen. Chip Campsen (4%).

Interestingly enough, the “establishment three” Republicans (Barrett, McMaster & Bauer) accounted for 41% of the vote, while 59% of respondents selected a “reform candidate.”

Again, we’re not saying this is scientific, but it does reinforce the perception that South Carolina’s opinion leaders are less than enthralled with “Gresham McBauer.”

Tomorrow, we’ll start polling the Democrats …

If the Furman Professor came in second with 19% you can be sure this poll is indicative of what the actual primary will be like (note: that is sarcasm).
