Knee-jerk Henry
S.C. Attorney General Henry McMaster’s increasingly predictable, taxpayer-funded gubernatorial campaign is making news today with an “official” announcement of his intention to prosecute a popular commercial website.
McMaster will pull the trigger on the suit if the website, Craigslist, doesn’t remove its ads related to prostitution – and do so within 10 days.
What a shocker …
The ink is barely dry from the first “Craigslist Killer” headlines, and ole’ “Kneejerk Henry” is already using the publicity surrounding that tragedy to get his name in the paper.
McMaster traveled from Columbia to Anderson, S.C. – the site of some recent illicit liaisoning, ironically – to make the announcement.
He also wrote a letter to the company’s CEO, although we’re using the term “letter” loosely.
“I hope you will take immediate steps to end Craigslist from being used to facilitate harmful activities in South Carolina,” McMaster wrote to Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster.
Wait, “end Craigslist from being used to facilitate …?” That sentence doesn’t even make sense.
Of course in his defense, we’re not entirely sure that McMaster can read.
Anyway, the “big announcement” is already (surprise) getting glowing coverage on the Palmetto Scoop, the paid political mouthpiece of McMaster’s consulting firm.
The Scoop even ran a picture of McMaster standing in front of police cars, which they like to use whenever the General is issuing “strict warnings.
Too funny.
Back in the real world of non-fawning analysis, it will be interesting to see whether or not McMaster will find any measurable pervert precipitation – be it on Craigslist or any other website.
Assuming he does, let’s hope he’s more adept in virtual reality than he is at prosecuting actual sex offenders.
Oh we’re sorry … “alleged” offenders.

“FITSNews increasingly predictable, Club-For-Growth/Howard Rich-funded propaganda campaign is making news today . . .”
EMPHASIS on the MAKING NEWS rather than REPORTING NEWS. Oh, and you can thank me later for correcting the opening paragraph.

PS – You’re actually going to let Wes scoop you on Haley? You guys are slipping or just too busy following the non-story over at USC. Who’s on first? Who cares.

I guess everyone wants to move up –
McMaster to Gov
and
Gowdy to Attny General (which is a great idea) but it would leave Spartanburg County without a viable leader.

I wonder if McMaster realizes that … despite the “CraigsList Killer” incident (which people mostly consider an anomaly and a reminder to be careful) … most people I know LIKE CraigList. I can’t imagine the hassle of trying to move to a new place without it. Just because it’s based in San Francisco, it still isn’t exactly unpopular here in SC.

Wow, what about Rick Beltram?

McMaster couldn’t care less what the law really says…
From CBS News:
“Can Craigslist be held criminally liable or sued for having illegal ads on its site? Not under current federal law, which grants immunity to sites like Craigslist for posting content it didn’t create.
“Congress’ rationale, which I think was a good one, that we want to not make illegal content legal or somehow inexcusable but place the onus on the people who are behaving badly in the first place,” said Matt Zimmerman, a senior staff attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation.”
