The Jinx Strikes Again?
The Sports Illustrated cover jinx has struck again – sort of.
This time the victim is Kansas City Royals’ pitcher Zach Greinke, who in case you’ve forgotten came out of nowhere last year to earn a starting spot in our FITS Fartknockers’ fantasy rotation.
Wow … judging from the silence (and lack of traffic on this post) you obviously had forgotten that.
Here’s a refresher.
Anyway, as amazing as Greinke’s start was last season – he’s blowing the doors off the league this year.
In fact, Greinke went 43 innings without giving up a single earned run – at least until he appeared on the cover of SI.
Then he promptly went out and gave up an earned run in the first inning against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Of course, the big hurler is still 5-0 with a ridonkulous 0.50 ERA, which in case you’re unfamiliar with baseball is mind-bogglingly good.
Plus, and let’s be honest, here – is the fact that Greinke gave up an earned run really compelling evidence of the SI cover jinx?
Seriously, it’s not like he keeled over, or a shark leap out of the stands and chew his right arm off.
Hell, he went on to record the win over the Blue Jays, didn’t he?
We love the jinx, don’t get us wrong, but to say Greinke has succumbed to it already is pushing it …
We’ll see what he does next time out …

The last time the university of Tennessee was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated(at least something like, not even sure) back in 200… They bounced back from a couple losses and got themselves ranked #7 in the nation, and got shafted to the Chick Fil A Bowl to face (unranked) Clempsun. Phillip Fulmer’s top ten team got owned by an unranked ACC team. It HAD to have been BAD luck…
Tennessee had TOO MANY players that season that are still currently in the NFL(most of which start) to fall to a mediocre ACC team.
Jason Allen DB(first round pick) Miami Dolphins
Rashad Baker DB Philadelphia Eagles
Kevin Burnett LB Dallas Cowboys
Dustin Colquitt P Kansas City Chiefs
Robert Meachem WR (first round pick) New Orleans Saints
Jonathan Mapu DE (undrafted Free Agent) Washington Redskins
Brad Cottam TE Kansas City Chiefs
Omar Gaither LB Philadelphia Eagles
Jabari Greer DB New Orleans Saints
Chris Hannon WR Detroit Lions
Tony McDaniel DT Miami Dolphins
Arron Sears OT Tampa Bay Buccs
Eric Young OT (Freshman that year, but still) Cleveland Browns
Kevin Simon LB Washington Redskins
That many guys with NFL contracts, and they lost to an unranked Clemson team… unbelievable…
